As
England continued to bask in the glorious summer weather, the players of the
Far from The Madding Crowd were indebted to stand-in Skipper, Mr. Dobner, on winning
the toss and opting to bat first at Pembroke’s batting paradise. There upbeat
candour was in stark contrast to the Marlborough team, who looked on dismally
at their skipper, one Mr. M. Shelley, muttering under their collective breath
as he sloped off the field to find his bowling boots…. Another
rock hard Pembroke track for the last game of 2003. Utilising everybody at
the top of the order whose surname began with ‘H’, it was only I. Howarth who
would survive the new ball. With N. Hebbes (12) somehow missing a straight
full toss on to his pads, it was a humourous precursor to his younger
sibling, Steve (5*), somehow retiring injured after entangling himself attempting
a pull shot. An Oscar secured for his Performance, he now awaits an influx of
Hollywood scripts which will hopefully merit his obvious acting talents. Howarth was then joined at the wicket by
fellow northerner, M. Westmoreland, and with the Marlborough bowling wilting
in the heat, they eased The MAD past the 100 mark. Indeed, such was their
composure out in the middle, it came as a real surprise when their
partnership ended – a woeful mix-up choreographed and orchestrated by
Howarth, culminating in Martin (run out 23) exiting stage left with a hardly
a syllable recognised in the Oxford dictionary. 114-2. Feelings
of remorse put aside, Howarth went on to enjoy a fruitful partnership with T.
Smith (25), and with non-contributions from E. Lester (0) and M. Bullock (2),
he neared that landmark MAD ton. Perhaps weary, or perhaps ill-informed of
his score (97), he swatted a full toss straight to a waiting mid-off. OUT. So
no century there then, just like Lee Davie a few years previous [also finishing
on 97*]. Whilst Howarth launched his kit around the changing rooms, late
cameos from Bridges (4), Mander (1), Mann (2*) and Dobner (1*) lifted the
home team total to a round 200. Martin
loves running with Ian. After
gorging on Groundsman Kev's delectable Tesco Value spread, the game was
resumed with Skipper Dobner delivering a miserly opening burst alongside the
similarly accurate A. Mann (1-17). With the opposition soon finding their run
rate spiralling out of control, it would be a dogged innings by future
Madster D. Edwards (57) that kept the Marlborough largely in the hunt. With
Dan’s enterprising knock starting to stutter, N. Hebbes (2-45) would
furtherly cash in with some excellent control. Mr. Westmoreland (0-47) would
offer up some customary chicken wings and hope, but T. Smith (2-30) readdressed
the balance to leave the away team clutching straws on 131-6. Pembroke
would soon be deserted as autumn set in. With the game now there for the
taking, the Skipper duly obliged (3-11) by reintroducing himself into the
attack and wrapping things up with a flurry of yorkers and a clatter of
stumps. Nice bullying of the bunnies, Steve! An excellent way to sign off for the end of a
successful MAD season, see you all in 2004. ‘Spam’
