“What an absolute pile of shite,” Mr. Dobner was heard to reflect after the match concluded on the eighth day of August 2004. “Yep, utter toilet” concurred Mr. Smith. Indeed, so limp was The MAD performance that it barely merits a write up, but needs are must, and I guess every game needs some sort of summarising – even this one. Even if nobody really cares if they remember it or not, which they probably don’t [and won’t].

After their highly successful Tour of Somerset, a Mad team bursting with confidence won the toss and elected to bat first on an excellent Pembroke batting track. 23.1 overs later, The MAD had melted like a yellow jelly in the face of a less than fiery Wootton bowling attack. Even the gorgeous summery surrounds failed to inspire, as The MAD tumbled from a position of relative safety [64-3 off 14 overs], into utter oblivion for the addition of just a further 26 runs. It was pitiful, in the extreme. The only scores of merit were a brisk 35 from I. Howarth, a robust 17 from A. Fisher and a stubborn 10 from Chairman M. Bullock. For the record, part-time trundler Neil Clifton helped himself to 3 for 6 off 3 overs, whilst trying to run off the effects of a night on the piss….

Hands up if you think The MAD are shit.

Tea. And even if Kev had cooked up a storm, it doubtlessly tasted shit for the home team. That said, the visitors’ already voluptuous appetite would have been swelled to crazily obese levels….

On resumption, the Wootton openers feasted on D. Jones (5-0-40-0) post tea selection of cakes and savouries, and only a catch off the nagging left-arm bowling of A. G. Mann (5-2-17-1) helped check their hunger. Skipper J. Hoskins (2.1-0-9-2) would return a couple of wickets, but nobody else did, with the Bladon boys coasting to a well-deserved se7en wicket victory.

In summation: a listless and awful Mad performance. File under the word “Shit”.

2 v 0 to the Wootton Boys.
