With Skipper J. Hoskins continuing his remarkable run of winning the toss on a sunblessed evening at Cutteslowe Park, The MAD opted to field first despite a shortage of men. With J. Hotson arriving a very creditable 30 minutes late, the game got underway – or at least it would have if it weren’t for a lack of stumps. A quick search of cars, vans and rotting kit bags would muster the nominal three, and thus the first few overs of the match were bowled rather comically from the same end. This situation only being resolved after injured Chairman, M. Bullock, answered an SOS by delivering a fresh set at speed in his gleaming TVR.

S. Dobner wields the new club bat ‘Biffa’.

With East Oxford trying to force the early pace, it was A. Mann (1-16) claiming the breakthrough with a smart caught and bowled. It precipitated a double change in the bowling with S. Dobner and D. Jones being thrust in to the attack. Runs ebbed and flowed, but smart fielding, including an excellent catch in the deep by Hoskins, allowed Dylan to return to the fold with the impressive figures of 2-21. Dobner, despite copping some East Oxford aggression, finished with 1-26 thanks to Ant Mann's impressive catch off one that disappeared into the stratosphere to return some moments later.

The opposition upped the ante with overs dwindling, and with Hoskins (0-21) protecting his bowling figures, it was left to trundlers N. Hebbes (0-27) and I. Howarth (0-14) to bear the brunt of the latter over thrashing not once moaning about their averages; as the East Oxford score finally readying itself on a not insurmountable 130-4.

With Dobner and T. Mander coping with the demands of opening The MAD account, it wasn't until the scoreboard read 20 that The Doc (6) perished caught behind. Next up came antipodean novelist A. Mann, sporting the Club’s newest investment – Biffa the Bat. This freshly molded lump of wood was used to punch a backward defensive all the way to a pair of hands at deep extra cover. Quite an achievement. But but he still had to go, making the long walk back to the assembled kit-bags and empty beer cans to reflect on a desultory duck.

Howarth now joined Dobner at the crease, and with The MAD becoming more aggressive in their approach, the score began to increase rapidly. Steve however, was now beginning to feel the ill-effects of 18 holes of golf earlier in the day followed by the small undertaking of a drive from Essex to Oxford. So it was no surprise when he (30) spooned a sitter to short leg after a rash of quick singles. Howarth, free from the constraints of running with a corpse, now took up the baton with Welsh sidekick, D. Jones, and after some lusty blows, The MAD required just 34 runs for a sterling victory.

Alas, with Howarth (46) heaving across a straight one and the sun slowly dipping behind the trees, an all-too familiar Mad collapse thus ensued. 97-3 soon became 99-7, with Fisher, Hebbes and Hoskins all going without troubling the scorers. And with an increasingly desperate Jones (9) leaving his stumps unattended, it all left number nine and last Mad batsman J. Hotson, marooned on 2 not out. Batsmen #10 and #11 didn’t play.

104 all out. Tut, tut, tut.
