A beautiful Friday
evening and after battling through the rush hour traffic, The MAD were all
present and correct for their third clash of the year against familiar
opponents Isis. Having won a Sunday 40
over encounter and lost a mid-week T20, the contest could be thought of as
something of a decider and both teams were clearly keen to secure the best of
three. In the crowd (of two) were I Howarth and his wife Vicki. As Vicki
tells it, Ian invited her out for a lovely summer evening stroll where they
happened upon a cricket match and low and behold, it involved The MAD. What a romantic evening Ian planned for Vicki on
the Friday…. Skipper Timms amazingly
won the toss and then amazingly chose to field. As the teams took to the
pitch, there were murmurings of ‘ringer’ from the opposition (according to
some very unreliable sources), but who were they referring to? Opening the bowling was
Reeves (4-1-18-0) who won last year’s player of the season at the age of 45.
This guy must have been amazing in his 20’s and 30’s and was clearly a
ringer. He was joined by Pearson (4-1-20-1) who a few weeks ago scored 113 n.o on this very pitch against these very opponents. This
guy is definitely a ringer. L Ainsworth, fielding in the covers dropped a
regulation catch and then escorted it to the boundary. Surely he can’t be a
ringer. Westmoreland (2-0-17-0) was still struggling with his action, but
maybe those yips are as a result of playing at the highest level. J Webster
(3-0-16-2) was unplayable at times and if it hadn’t been for the odd loose
one, he could only have been a ringer. M Bullock (2-0-13-1) was turning it a
mile and clearly when he had R Kella caught on the boundary by (ringer) N
Hill, he had sprung a trap which only those who have played at a first class
level could have set. Queens. Postcard perfect. Isis were proceeding
competently if not spectacularly to reach 85 for 4 from 15 overs, when Timms
turned to Ainsworth (3-1-7-3) to try and bring some control. His marvellous
figures and Wallingford CC shirt can only mean one thing. At the other end
the skipper himself (2-0-5-1) was bowling just as tardily, and that combined
with his mastery of the team fielding positions made it clear he had stepped
down a level or two for this game. Isis achieved 99 in their 20 overs leaving
The MAD exactly five per over for the win. With such a bounty of
talent at his disposal, Timms could have selected the batting order in any
configuration of his choosing. He went with D Shorten (11) and M Westmoreland
(32 n.o). Anyone who had seen Dave hit that 6 into
the front garden of a house against Whitland CC in 2008 was bound to conclude
that he was a T20 specialist and definite ringer. Martin played with a
combination of stoic, watchful defence and sweetly timed flowing drives. His
running between the wickets nearly put Emerson in the cardiac unit. Martin
should have dialled it down a bit as it was all too obvious that he was a
class above. Next up was N Hill,
straight from the major leagues. Isis can count themselves lucky that he was
caught before he could really go to town. D Emerson (30 n.o.)
was next to bat. He claimed not to have played for the last six weeks due to
injury, but it is highly suspicious that this is how long the T20 Blast has
been going on at County Level. Maybe we should correlate his appearances for The
MAD against the times when Hampshire or Warwickshire are playing. It was
great to see him back and as he’s mainly known for his impact with the ball,
who knows what will happen when he’s fully fit. ‘Big Bash’ Bullock (left), flanked by ‘Wally’
Ainsworth (centre) and ‘T20 Blast’ Emerson (right). Finally it was up to
Bullock (20 n.o.) to hoist a few skilfully over the
top as he may or may not have been doing for Queensland in the Big Bash a few
months ago, whilst Hotson only just made it back from the IPL to cross the
boundary and therefore record a nought, not out off
nought balls. So The MAD romped to
victory in 17.4 overs, one of the most complete, all round, team performances
of the season. As the sun set, the vote for Man of the Match was so chock full
of candidates that it could only be settled by a single transferrable vote
form of proportional representation. Could things get any better than a good
win against tough opponents on a pitch with the right amount of bounce and a
bar in the pavilion? ‘Reevsie’
