In contrast to the drizzle of the morning the last T20 of the season was met on arrival with glorious late August sunshine, the wind was warm and the sun was already well in to its downward trajectory towards the horizon. Both teams were there promptly, so promptly that we were able to get off to a slightly early start. Skipper Shorten lost the toss but his opposite made an interesting but ultimately sensible call in asking The MAD to bat first, which would leave them to battle it out in the gloom that would come at the end of the game.

Hotson and Hill faced up first. Jake (1) always looks positive when opening and has had some good starts for us this season but tonight after a couple of bright drives was undone by an excellent off cutter. Nick (0) departed in similar fashion swishing and missing for once. Emerson came to the crease who in recent matches has looked like he is playing a different game to the rest of us. Well no, that is not true – why do commentators say that? Let’s be honest he always looks as if he is playing cricket – it definitely doesn’t look like netball or swimming or polo – he is playing cricket. But he has been batting sublimely of late. But not tonight, a loopy pie ball outside leg top edged and dropped to a fielder. That left us on 9-3. Never bothered us in the past, next!

Shorten constructs a massive innings of 4.

Hoskins strode to the wicket, goose in hand. On his day – and all our batters from 1-11 have had a day this year, James has the most exquisite timing and wristy flicks that has the spectators salivating for more. He had a couple of nice flicks and a lovely cover drive tonight but fell, again bowled – were The MAD being too positive? (27-4) Bullock (3) found it hard to get going and Shorten (4) played a way to positive shot to a good ball given the situation both departing both bowled (53-6).

Reading stuck around for a bit before lofting one in to the deep (0), Rundle’s honest assessment of his dismissal was that it was too quick and too straight and too good and not really very fair. Why do bowlers do this? That’s what captain Shorten wanted to know. What happened to all the lovely pie we are used to?  So that left us on 72-8 with about 6 overs to go

How the hell did we get to 72 when no one up to now got to double figures? Well one person did, Mr Reevsie, head the size of a planet and all that saved us from utter ignominy. Sometimes this positive brand of cricket doesn’t work; we were a bit in tatters tonight. But it did work for Reevsie, he blocked the good ones but let rip on anything loose and cut and pulled and drove his way to a wonderful 46. It’s great to see Mike back and firing with the bat – there is no better sight than watching our left hander in full flow. Well done Mike for a great knock.

Mike was out bowled and that left Russ and Bob holding up the last wicket with about 3 overs still left. They played really well, knocking it for singles, hitting the bad ball. Russ played a lofted on drive which just shows you what T20 cricket does to you – I have never seen that before from Russ. He was last out and The MAD were dismissed in the 19th over for 95. It didn’t seem enough but we would have a go at defending it. Maybe it would get dark that would help.

Judas Webster – chipping in with another 7 not out….

Shorten opened up with Roberts, who was a bit off the mark and got the treatment from the batsmen and his ruthless captain (1-0-10-0). Rundle from the other end quickly got in to that nagging length that has proved so hard for batsmen to get away and had his rewards of their opener with a lovely off cutter (3-0-12-1). Emerson (3-0-17-0) was brought on to replace Bob, his pace the captain hoping would be harder to get away. Partly right partly wrong, plenty of dot balls but also an almighty 6 straight back over Dave’s head. Dave is now in therapy about that, he can’t believe a batman could actually do that to him. We need to show Dave videos of him batting. Shorten was happy because he sensed the cruel Mitchell Johnson song about bowling to the left and right and shite etc might now transfer to Dave from now on. Tee hee.

Hoskins (3-0-17-1) replacing Rundle got some control and the valuable wicket of (can’t read it) but OUP basically were progressing too quickly. They were positive, going for quick singles, whacking the ball hard and looked like a team who were determined to put this game to bed. Reading (3-0-17-1) came on and after a wayward first over found his length and was hard to play and picked up a useful wicket. But ultimately we didn't have enough runs to defend, Shorten (2.1-0-11-0) and Reeves (2-0-8-0) finished off and the game ended with a leg bye.

Another 30 runs and it would have been interesting. Well done to OUP, they bowled well and batted with intent and thoroughly deserved victory. Well done Mike for making a game of it, well done team for a great season, we have won more than we have lost, we have all – without exception – had our moments in the sun to take with us in to the winter.
