They say never go back,
never try to repeat a winning formula. Examples include Grease 2, Speed 2
(Cruise Control) and the utterly forgettable Blues Brothers 2000. So it is
with little enthusiasm and a lot of trepidation that we return to the ballad
of Lennie and George of yesterday. It’s now a day later and
after sleeping in a real bed (albeit at the Fountain Court) for the first
time in years, our two heroes are now fully integrated in to the FFTMCC team.
Lennie (the tall one) and George (the short, grumpy one) are both selected to
play The Trojans, a multi-disciplinary, multi-talented sports outfit from
near Southampton. Tina’s Travels, now into footwear merchandising. Tina’s Travel again did
us proud, arriving on time for the 30 minute trip and after Russ announced on
only about seven occasions “this must be it”, we arrived at the ground in
very good time to see a very professional outfit already well in to its warm
up. Fortunately this was the first team getting ready for a league clash.
Nerves started to set in as the team realised that even if we were playing
their third, sixth or twenty eighth team, we were likely to get slaughtered. It was skipper Thorn for
the day and he did the only two things which could be asked of a touring
captain on a hot day after a night on the booze. First he agreed the match
should be 35 overs and second he won the toss and batted first. Well done
mate, job done. Just like the Admiral Nelson from last night, the club bar at
Trojans had a lot to recommend it, but nevertheless the two teams made the
half mile trek across to a far pavilion for the start of the game. Matt – surviving the half mile trek back and
forth to the bar. George unfortunately was
unaccustomed to the rich food of a regular diet and therefore had to make
five trips behind the pavilion to do what is known in MAD parlance as ‘A
Boon’. Much refreshed, he returned to the field to score a respectable 45 in
just 41 deliveries. Other highlights were a swashbuckling 36 from Shorten and
a second PB in two days from Timms (29) who is proving to be a ‘batsman batsman’ this season. However the real standout
performance came from thirteen year old T Bamford (7-0-24-2) of the Trojans,
who is a spinner to watch for the future. In the blazing sun, The MAD swung,
pushed and nurdled their way to a respectable 177 in 35 overs. D. Shorten finding form with a healthy 36 from
the bat. After the two mile round
trip for tea, which was lovely for all the right reasons, The MAD returned to
try to do some fielding. For the third time in three days, Rundle (5-0-21-2)
somehow managed to coax his body through another performance. Lennie
(4-0-20-0) rolled back the years, to a time before he’d learnt to bowl and
compounded his performance by running through, under and around any skied
chance which came his way. Reeves (5-1-18-2) picked
up a couple to delight his fantasy supporters thanks in part to a ‘proper’
slip catch from Rundle. Pearson (4-0-19-1) got one. Timms (3-0-30-0) completed
his transition from bowler to batsman. George (4-0-15-1) turned his arm over
before finally giving up his life on the road. ‘Dickie Bird’ Hotson umpiring. After cruising at one
stage, it was becoming squeaky bum time for the FFTMCC as The Trojans began
catching up towards the target. The MAD were employing an in / out field.
‘Out’ to the senior batsman T Dimant and ‘in’ to the youngster T Bamford on
the assumption that he wouldn’t have the strength to clear the in-field.
Unfortunately despite lacking the necessary strength, he did have the
necessary timing and skill to push the ball to the boundary, twice. I say
again, one for the future. In the end Trojans
needed six off the final ball to tie, but could only achieve a single. The
MAD had won! A miserable run covering six years had finally come to an end. The first victorious MAD Touring team in over 6
years – starring Lennie (bottom, two from left) and George (bottom right) At a conservative
estimate we could say that Trojans probably have a hundred players in their
various teams who could have thrashed our side, but just like Hythe and
Dibden last night, they understood what we were about and put out a team
accordingly, so thanks very much for that. Special thanks to Edward Osmond,
for setting it all up and looking after our pensioner Russ after the game. So that’s it. Proof if
proof were needed that there will not be an ‘Of Mice and Men 3’. Fourth Ashes Test update: Day three,
Trent Bridge – Australia 60 & 253, England 391-9. England won by innings
and 78 runs. ‘Reevsie’
