Se7en years had elapsed since Hanney CC last hosted the
Far from the MCC, a curiousity in lieu of their genial contests of
yesteryear. One remembers the camaraderie post-match around a purpose built
BBQ, with Antony Mann decrying the ethics of Dave Johns’ magnificent
pie-throwing whilst stoking the sausages. Then again, Hanney’s reluctance in
agreeing a match in those intervening years may have had something to do with
the ignominy of never beating The MAD – hardly a ringing endorsement.
Nonetheless, with communication channels reopened and Hanney having gone
through a myriad of personnel changes, the evening of May 28, 2015 would
hopefully renew a fruitful and enjoyable rivalry. With Mr. Shorten apparently crippled from the excesses
of guiding The MAD home on Sunday, Black Cap Emerson stepped into the breach
on a pleasantly non-wet evening in non-East or non-West Hanney. His first job
was to win the toss, his second job to keep his success a closely guarded
secret from Mr. Timms, his third job to instruct Ainsworth and Hadfield to
“pad the fuck up”. Since that breathtaking debut score of 72 back in the
Iron Age, R. G. B. Hadfield has always been one those wonderful enigmas of
Club Mad. A batsman of obvious pedigree, whose rare and fleeting appearances
have left him open to such ridicule, even he believes he is in some way
related to Lord Lucan himself. But, following on from persistent nags and with
a body now in full health, Richard is back and firing on all cylinders – as
proved here with a delightful innings of 36* (off 26) including a Champagne
six over long off. Together with the effortless Ainsworth 21 (off 26) they
opened The MAD account to the tune of 60-0 before the former’s retirement. Hadfield
(batting) looked in great form with his 36*. After such a fine opening gambit, G. Carter also rolled
back the years, as he sought to emulate one of the most boring innings ever
recorded in Mad folklore – his now infamous crawl to 26* off 105 balls at
this very same venue in 2008. Here, he excelled himself once again,
undercutting a SR of 24.76 with an effort of 12.50 as he amassed a sublime 2
runs off 16 balls to a chorus of “for fuck's sake, Geoff!” In Geoff’s defence, the pitch was proving itself quite
two-paced, with those establishing a start going on to make a decent score.
As was the case with Howarth (30* off 25) and Emerson (32* off 22), whose
entertaining slogs to an inviting cow corner had them both retire at the end
of the nineteenth over. Hotson (1*) and Timms (6*) would then see The MAD total
142-2 at the close. So just the two wickets to fall, huh? Is this sport
really just a bowler's game? G. Cherrill thought so
– his figures the standout amongst the profligate with 2-1-3-2. Well done
him. G. Timms (6*)
– pinch hitting extraordinaire. In reply, Hanney made 39 before Smith (4-0-14-1) and
Roberts (4-0-24-1) both pegged back the stumps. Thorn has come of age as a
bowler in recent times, curtailing his chucking and being relied on to bowl
stump to stump. Ditto, Tall Bob, those shit half-trackers first up are a
thing of the past, as he now enjoys his regular successes in the T20 arena. With the required run-rate climbing in the face of G.
Timms' (4-0-11-0) mesmeric twirl, The MAD now deployed the star bowler of
Tour 2014. Against a backdrop of catchy tunes from a nearby fun fare, R. P.
Turner (4-0-45-0) delighted the locals and Hanney batting order alike by
throwing open the door to his bakery and giving away everything on the cheap.
G. Cherrill (30* ret) wolfed down the multitude of
cream doughnuts, whilst Z. Naymi (28* ret) gobbled
up the exquisite iced buns and éclairs. It was a triumphant success, and if
Russ’ print works ever struggle to fund his living, then a career in catering
would surely be a runaway success. It is worth noting his figures were skewed
in a furtherly shit direction by the now customary sieve-like hands of
Howarth, and by Smith opting instead to use his wrist and nose to catch the
ball. Into the business end of the match, and an utterly
improbable victory target for the hosts now seemed eminently probable. Still
no more wickets and plenty more runs. A bowlers game, huh? Mr. Hill
(right) discusses baseball, homeruns, baseball and crappy Midlands football. Following his transfer from Major League Baseball, Mr.
Hill (2-0-23-0) bowled adroitly under fire and was unlucky to see one somehow
bounce over middle stump. And thus it all came down to the final over and Howarth
restricting the Hanney batsman from tonking the necessary 18 runs for
victory. The implausible looked plausible with J. Hilliam 25* underlining his
League pedigree with a couple of lovely straight drives, but his hopping from
RHB to LHB and back again, allowed Ian to spear a couple down leg. Contentious?
You could call it that – though the umpire said fine. So two dot balls.
Hanney 135-2. Victory to The MAD by 7 runs. With grumbles and mutterings subsiding, along with the claret
from Mr. Smith's nose, players held an animated discussion at the Black Horse
pub regarding the laws governing wides. Here, an online ticket was raised for
‘The Wide Inspector’.... Good game. Good game. Especially for the poor batsmen. ‘Mr.
Legside’
