There was a distinctly end of term feeling to the encounter with Isis. We were allowed to bring games in, wear our own clothes and everything. It was strange to be playing after a week off and with the winter approaching; here was a little island of cricket in a vast ocean of non-cricket. It was also reminiscent of the 2008 Champions League Final in which Chelsea and Man Utd decamped 3000 odd miles to in inhospitable wastes of Russia, as we and our neighbours both travelled beyond the ring road to the village of Stanton St John.

The pavilion at Stanton St John is somewhat quirky, with furniture straight out of a working men’s club circa 1970. The rest of the building seems to be largely held together with expanding foam, but nevertheless serves its purpose extremely well.

Gary won the toss and decided to bat on a good looking track. As Reeves and Shorten wandered out to begin the umpiring, they reflected on what a remarkable season it has been. It was a day for Geoff rather than George as he departed for 2 off of 14 balls. At the other end Pearson got a duck, due to some good bowling from J Ponsford, who bowled some devilish outswing.

Every side needs an anchor and ours today was R Hadfield (45 off 92 balls.) He was lucky to survive early on, being put down in the slips, but came back to provide an innings of great value in what was to prove a low scoring game. After brief innings from Turner (10) and Shorten (13) The Mad were struggling at 55 for 4 off of 21 overs. Fortunately the ‘no fear’ cricket, which has been the hallmark of the team this season, was in evidence today as Timms (23) hit his first ever six for the club. Reeves (16 off 10) also chipped in with a monstrous straight six, which fortunately / unfortunately had the length, but not quite the line to land on Pearson’s car. With contributions from Mellor (5 n.o.) and Reading (7 n.o.) The Mad had somehow scrambled to 138 in the allotted 35 overs. But how good would that be? Nothing wrong with the pitch, so it was going to require some miserly bowling.

At tea the teams mixed amicably in the Jim Callaghan room in the pavilion, discussing those traditional English summer topics of the Premier League and the NFL.

In the field, The Mad got off to the best possible start with Reeves (7-2-11-2) sending R Kella back for a titanium as he chipped the ball to mid-on. It seemed to hang in the air for an eternity as the look on Geoff’s face turned from surprise to terror and finally to relief as he cradled it safely. Roberts (5.3-0-18-0) didn’t get the 7 wickets he needed to break records, but he must be very pleased with his season.

Shorten (7-0-19-3) bowled with his customary excellence. One of his wickets was thanks to a decent catch behind from keeper for the day Paddy and also fair play to A. Symons who walked without hesitation. Rundle (6-0-22-3) has, against all the odds, dragged his body through a full season. A shout for most improved perhaps?

Then, when you least expect it, something amazing happens. Step forward Gary Timms. Off the bowling of Reading (4-0-16-1), J Ponsford smashed one wide of mid-on. Gary’s catch was, what’s the word – balletic? He seemed to pivot on one foot. It was like watching a video of a discus thrower in reverse as the ball seemed to stick in the crook of his wrist. We’ll want to see a re-enactment of that one at the AGM.

Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, Isis had stayed largely on the rate most of the way through. Finally they needed 23 off the last 24 balls, with one wicket remaining. At one stage it was thought they might get there in wides. Then, suddenly it was all over. N Wyatt called for a quick single, but MOTM Hadfield was quicker and in the gathering gloom the Zing bails lit up with the batsmen short of his ground.

So that’s it. After twenty wins, eleven defeats, two ties, one trip to A&E, two trips on Tina’s travel and some remarkable catches, it’s all over for another year. Good times.
