With time of a premium
to showcase ones skills and book a place on the 2017 Tour, misgivings about
the weather were brushed to one side, if not quite off the table. Whilst
Captain Turner and Fixture Executive Howarth are believers in the BBC weather Nine to five jobs are
alien to The MAD, they are the reserve of the opposition and or Dolly Parton,
henceforth the debate over starting T20s earlier. This pointless discussion at
the Whitehouse Pub was held by sages Timms, Ainsworth and (once again) Howarth,
all seemingly oblivious to the fact the Far from the MCC would end up playing
a team consisting of three or four and therefore conceding the toss (the
opponent would bat first). Sat in the elements, it would
then rain a little, it would then stop, and then some West Indian guy would
trot over to the table to adjust his wedding tackle whilst seven sheets to
the wind. Clubman Turner possesses
a coin of mystical nay legendary prowess. It features a head and a tail, and
“tails never fails”. Very true Russ, but only of any consequence if you are the individual calling the
tune. Iffley went tails and Iffley chose to bat. Immediately securing
their places on the tour bus, Reeves (4-0-11-0) and Rundle (4-0-12-1) were
metronomic in their line and length, and the only real point of discussion
was the disappearance of Psycho’s bowling ball from under his shirt and
whether he’d undergone a gastric belt. Pouncing in the covers,
the ageless Nick Hill threw down the stumps to prove he was ready for the
off, alas the bombshell being he was bound for Bologna and Italy, not the
hills and seas of Minehead. With the weight drained Rundle imposter knocking
back Meier for a blob (Brundle, if you believe the scorebook, and maybe we do),
Iffley were wobbling on a rather soggy 20-2. With the skies darkening
and air becoming moist, Timms and Williams completed an over apiece before
moist became wet. This presented an opportune moment to prove ones fitness
before the selectors, sprinting for the covers and pushing their not
inconsiderable weight. Securing further places on the bus would come
Ainsworth, Howarth and Westmoreland, the latter discarding his cotton wool
and dutifully avoiding any hamstring tear. Huddled under the
pavilion eaves and surveying the prophecies of the BBC, Turner would have
half an ear to Soothsayer Timms’ latest climate ramblings. “It’s a fluke,
these BBC peeps never get anything right, see… it’s stopping now!” Time
enough to go back out, and time enough for Timms (2-0-12-0) to avoid econ and
Williams (2-0-16-0) to avoid killing someone with a slippery beamer. But for
their sheer willingness to go back
out there and throw a few down, their places are secured, as were those for Hotson’s
mud diving heroics behind the timber and Turner’s decision to field four yards
from the bat whilst sacrificing his fingers. Out on a limb. With the newly installed
Brasenose power showers offering another good soak, albeit a warm one, hands
were shaken and the match called off. A decision in the interest of everyone,
bar one. Since turning his back on his native homeland, Kolpak Vermaak’s bank
balance has benefitted from the instant rewards of playing for The MAD, but
his contract stipulated touring was based on solely on performance.
Opportunity is a wonderful thing, Corne. Dolefully he clambered
back into his leathers before biking back off to Abingdon. However a nickname
is born. ‘A. Tourist’
