It was the hottest June day since 1976 as The MAD assembled at the Talkhouse near Stanton-St-John for the crucial cup game against the most frequent of frequent opponents, Isis. The FFTMCC were somewhat depleted, missing arguably their three best batsmen, Howarth, Turner and Ainsworth. They were also without inspirational leader Gary Timms who was shivering in the cooler temperatures in Portugal.

With the game barely half an hour away the eleventh and at this point by far the most knackered member of the team, Jan Webster arrived by bike from Florence park, but which way had he come? Treasurer Reeves was certain that the best route was along the Marston Road and up through Elsfield passing the blue plaque marking the thirty nine steps of former residence John Buchan. Geoff Carter, who has lived a lifetime in Oxfordshire was of the opinion that he would have pedalled up Headington Hill. In the end as he sank exhausted in to a chair Jan confounded both by describing a route including the Western bypass and notorious Headington hamburger roundabout.

Obviously on a day as hot as this the thing to do is win the toss and bat. However, that is what the opposition EXPECT you to do and therefore to throw them off guard skipper Lego, egged on by the rest of the team decided that it would be us who spent to early afternoon in the field. In the words of Adrian Cronauer it was hot, damn hot. So hot that drinks after 14 and 28 overs were a necessity rather than a luxury.

The bowling was opened by Darley (8-2-26-1) who extracted variable bounce to the extent that batsmen were calling for helmets. At times he was simply unplayable and kept keeper Moo busy behind the stumps as balls flew high and low. At the other end Dave Emerson (4-1-21-0) bowled excellently, but his run of bad luck with injuries again came to the fore as he was forced to retreat to the boundary after four overs and from there out of the game a short time later, to be replaced by Jake. By this time R Stevenson (113) was starting to hit his stride and was apparently heading to his second century of the week. I’m saying nothing about mingers, bringers, flingers or – anyone else for that matter. The sun really began to burn down as Reeves (5-0-34-0) and Shorten (4-1-35-0) toiled away. Only with the introduction of Roberts (6-0-39-2) did The MAD get any reward for their efforts. Like Emerson he bowled really well, keeping a good line and length like we know he can. He also took a decent caught and bowled.

Finally Pearson (5-0-23-2) removed Stevenson, only for J Ponsford (60 not out) to take over the mantle. Were it not a cup game, surely it would have been reduced to 35 overs as the temperature in the shade (not that there was any) passed 33 degrees. The remaining bowlers, Hoskins (5-0-42-0), Webster (1-0-7-0) and Smith (2-0-14-0) finally bought the curtain down on one of the longest 40 overs we had experienced. Isis had amassed 235 (although the scorebook is a little hazy on this minor detail) which was surely beyond what our abstemious batting line-up could provide.

After an all too brief tea, it was time for The MAD to bat and Isis to survive the conditions. After fielding for 40 overs, a few overs of umpiring was too much for James Hoskins as he succumbed to blurred vision and had to be helped from the field. Fortunately cold towels were available and despite having to respond to “How are you feeling?” about once every 30 seconds for the next half an hour, he made a full recovery.

J Pearson, one of many MAD batsmen to make 20 and no more.

The MAD innings was characterised by those who made a start, but then didn’t go on and those who didn’t make a start at all. No less than six players made 20 or thereabouts, with none reaching 30. 154 all out seemed like a reasonable total in the conditions, but in reality we were beaten by a better team with a couple of stand-out individuals. So as Isis march on to the Friendly Cup final, it’s up to The MAD to take plenty of fluids and a few cold showers to build themselves up for the 3rd place playoff.
