One by one The MAD convened upon the closed doors of the White House. Like crystal clear water overflowing a pool and meandering downstream they eventually drifted to the local Londis shop, stocking up on free beer, before settling at Queens College cricket ground where the afternoon’s cricketing spectacle would be playing out.

Chairs drawn up; cans cracked open; shirts off; suntan lotion applied. And relax. Time to game – 1 hour 57 minutes.

The EDL enjoy a pre-match moan and piss up.

Various topics were discussed during the pre-match ramble but it is fair to say that the prospect of imminent rain featured dominantly. Will it won’t it? If it does what time will it? Will it just be a shower? Why don’t they actually have the covers on the strip? All questions to be answered with the help of a dozen or so weather prediction websites and apps, all of which had a different answer. Of course whether or not to play your Fantasy Joker when you have at least five players should be inversely proportional to how pessimistic you are about the likelihood of it raining so it was with much puzzlement to most of The MAD ranks that the ‘it’ll be raining by four’ Northern pessimist elected to play his Joker.

Discussion was interrupted.

“I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom anatidaephobia in the history of our nation cricket team.

I have a Dream!” – Said Russ. Sadly it didn’t come true….

Luther King is castled.

Isis bods turned up one by one and reluctantly one by one The MAD ranks donned their whites and turned their minds to playing cricket rather than just talking about it.

Opting to bat first after winning the toss in such sultry conditions seemed like a wise idea at the time – at least it gave half the team to have a quick nap to sleep off the pre-match indulgences.

However… Turner (0) seemed demonised by his nightmare of the previous night – so determined was he not to get a Golden Duck that he forgot to score and bagged the first Mandarin of the day. Quickly followed by another Mallardishious performance by Emerson (0) lasting just the two balls. Both bowled by a canny Whiter (7-3-7-2) finding line and length with fine ability.

Howarth (38) and Ainsworth (45) buttoned down the hatches to force a fine partnership of 89. With Howarth seeing off the opening bowlers, accelerating for one ball and then getting caught. And Ainsworth seeing off the opening bowlers, accelerating for two balls and then getting caught. To be fair it was all in their master plan – to get to the 25th over then get out… erm hit out… get out, hit out, what was it again?

Howarth (batting) practicing his 3- iron (to crap effect).

It took a while to get to the end of the 26th over, with Hotson (0) adding a Bombay version and Pearson (0 Golden) a tasty Peking with Hoisin Sauce.

It was only Bullock (12 n.o.) that seemed averse to the feathery collapse, finding the middle of the bat with aplomb.

Another over, another Duck, this time a much sought after Gressingham. Timms (0 Golden) acting out of character for recent times but adding to an increasingly formidable tally of career Goldens.

Reeves (2), Hoskins (3) and Carter (1) did absolutely nothing to increase the Badling so tea ensued. One things for sure, Isis know how to put on a traditional tea in the Clubroom fitted out with a fine dining table seated for 22.

A score of 113 then – the same total James W. Pearson amassed against Isis on his own in 2014. Possibly too low but then you never know against a below average Isis team struggling to record a single victory against The MAD since the infamous 2015 AGM comments. There was an air of confidence around defending such a low total.

What a difference three years makes….

A steady fall of wickets and good bowling economy had both teams wondering whether an unlikely defence was possible as Bevan (2) was snatched behind by Carter off Pearson’s bowling (4-0-12-1) and Hoskins (7-0-29-4) picked up some wily wickets (Stephenson (24 – lbw going for an over enthusiastic reverse sweep), Phibbs (15 – set up dart ball), Kella (8 – Ainsworth redeeming his earlier drop), and R Stoneyman (0))

The MAD also witnessed a fine return to bowling form from Emerson (6-1-15-0) deserving a wicket but picking up economy.

But alas Isis finally managed to find a steady partnership in Cooper (28 n.o.) and Henry (23 n.o.) who to be fair were the only batsmen of the day to find the outfield wasn’t that slow. The partnership bought the Isis to victory with a good eight overs to spare.

So, all good things must come to an end but hey ho, seven consecutive winning games against the old Isis oppo since early 2015 ain’t bad at all is it…?
