In the words (word) of
Carolyn Ahern, from the Fast Show, the 1st July 2018 was “Scorchio” and
getting progressively more scorchio as the afternoon progressed. It was
therefore a crucial toss to win and the team were very thankful when Mr Timms
called correctly and we could avoid the most scorching of rays, under a cabana,
for the first 35 overs. Unusually the team were without Mr Howarth, who was
still recovering from Vicki’s 50th birthday party the night before. Equally
unusually for this season, Mr Reeves was back following his jaunt around the
world frittering away the club’s embezzled funds. Smooth Operator … the Legend of Darley (Vic’s 50th
bash). The MAD played a typical
MAD innings. Pearson was caught behind for 4, Russ got a business like 28 off
41 balls whilst Geoff got a Geoff like 20 off 41 balls. Shorten (15) was just
getting going when he was bowled and Thorn got a
golden. Reeves got a scratchy 12, whilst Corne got a “nine more than he
expected” 9. Just as the score was petering out to something undefendable,
along came Timms. His 31 off just 25 balls included seven scoring shots in a
row, all ones and twos, much to the consternation of first Reeves and then
Hotson, running up and down in the blistering heat from the other end. Jake’s
(13 not out) batting seems to have come on leaps and bounds in the last
couple of years and he stands at the threshold were so many (mostly from this
team) have stood before him i.e. thinking that he can bat. Remember that way
disappointment and recrimination lie, so just enjoy it whilst it lasts Jake.
Darley played a very un-Darley like innings (i.e. not 6, 4, out) to get 4 in
seven balls. Bob anchored the innings with a fine 10 not out until the 35
overs had expired. At tea, the general
opinion was that 154 was not going to be enough, so we should just jack it in
now and go and enjoy what was left of the afternoon, lying in the sunshine.
Unfortunately, the opposition wanted their go and so it would be us scurrying
around on the scorched earth. Bob. Darley (7-0-42-2)
started extremely brightly, dismissing their openers for one apiece. In at
four, was P Mendar, who although we didn’t know it
at the time, we had seen before, when he was out for four in the first round
of the cup competition. As Darley delivered the first ball he just leaned
back and lifted it high over long off for six. Oh dear. After that he
continued to pepper the boundary, avoiding the fielders stationed there until
he reached his 50 in about 27 balls. After that he really tried to cut loose
on Timms. Now we come to perhaps
the only thing this match will be remembered for (apart from Harwell
remembering that it was the first time they’d beaten us in ages.) Timms
(7-1-40-1) bowled and P Mander again smacked it high towards long off. Up and
up it went (hang time estimated by Hang Time to be about 7 seconds) but it
didn’t go that far. On the long off boundary, Bob was waiting. And waiting
and waiting. He didn’t move, not an inch. Not forwards or backwards or side
to side. Just stood there waiting and waiting some more. This was it, this
was the match right here. Catch it and we were still in with a slim chance.
Drop it and things were likely to be over in short order. Not even Bob can
really explain why he did what he did next. As the ball finally started its
downward trajectory, he lazily reached up with one of his big hands,
as if shielding his eyes from the sun. As the ball plummeted towards him, his
one arm reached its full extension at the precise moment that the ball
arrived there. He looked at the ball as if it was a lightbulb he had just
changed, the most normal and inevitable thing to be holding in one
hand before nonchalantly discarding it to amble in to the astonished
congratulations of his team mates. Timms lobbing down some flan. After that there was
only a couple of moments of hilarity. Darley with a drop and some fumbling as
he watched balls bounce past him to the boundary. Pearson went ‘studs up’ to
slide tackle Timms as they both chased a ball beyond the boundary. Darley
finally took a catch and Shorten took a couple of wickets. Harwell romped
home with four wickets and five overs to spare. So, a decent game
against a sporting opposition on a blistering day with one moment that will
live long in the memory. That’ll do. ‘Reevsie’
