Situated to the south
west of Oxford, Wantage and Grove is one of the oldest cricket clubs in
existence, with the first recorded match in 1863 against Abingdon which apparently
Wantage won. The Victorians were not constrained by forty minutes for lunch
and fifteen minutes for teas, their meal breaks were all together more
civilised with joints of cold roast beef, lamb, ham on the bone and huge pork
pies followed by raspberry, gooseberry and other soft fruits as flans or
tarts accompanied by flagons of ale or cider together with sherry and malt
liquors. So, it sounds like we’re playing in the
wrong era then…. Team photo: from L to R – Giant Duck and
somebody’s cap. Nestled between the emerald
beauty of village life and the rampaging horror of the UK’s house building
obsession, the W&G ground boasted all you could need for an excellent game
of cricket. Although not elevated as such, one could be forgiven for thinking
we were playing at high altitude, because after being put into bat, the home team
failed miserably to keep the ball on the floor. In total, there would be
eight catches taken including two by Howarth, whose joy saw him doubling his
tally for the entirety of 2017. There were also at least five dropped catches
including two by Shorten, who rather than accept he may need a new pair of
glasses, instead suggested his brain was merely “about a second behind (on
the day)”. Grateful recipients of balls that stuck to hand were Newman
(4-0-19-1), MOTM Roberts (5-1-10-2), Hoskins (7-2-18-2) and Timms (7-0-36-2),
although the latter thanked himself for catching his own bowling, this time had
it recorded correctly in the scorebook. Shorten also bowled some overs
(3-0-17-0) and according to W&G they apparently tasted divine. Field Marshal Pearson (44) in fine fettle as he clips
one to leg. A below-par W&G
total of 124 was indebted to the prodigious talent of fourteen-year-old L.
Turnbull (57), who not only showed maturity beyond his years, but also knew
which fielders to aim at when miscuing the ball in the air. In this instance,
Mr Turner showcased the agility of an Ascot drunk, back peddling like he’d copped one to the nose, tipping the ball over the
crossbar before landing on his skull. It is unknown exactly what happened to
Russ in his hours spent at the JR, but the imposter who returned, later claimed
preposterously he wasn’t hungry…??? Tea ranked up there with
some of the best in recent years, with Mr Sharma’s missus doing herself
proud. Highlights were the stuffed curry peppers and a variety of chicken
wraps, though this undervalues the spread as a whole. This wasn’t
a last-minute trip to Tesco’s after a panicked plea from a skipper, oh no. With half The MAD team
padding up in anticipation of the effondrement attendu, a consecutive Sunday
saw the opening batsmen navigate to drinks without losing a wicket. Such was
the sedate and stoic nature of the partnership, one
could be forgiven for slipping back in your plastic chair and letting your
mind drift back to the halcyon days of Pembroke. Ahh, the good old days of
rattling timber, frantic searches through the team kit bag for some pads, expletives and disillusioned moaning about “never again”.
Those were the days, romantically treasured memories of magnificent incompetence
and Andrew Morley building a metal mountain out of discarded beer cans. In
stark contrast, Pearson (44) appears to have rediscovered his golden form of
2014 and Hadfield (34*) appears to have … well, appeared again, at least for
now. Carter pulling some moves out on the Wantage
dancefloor. It was a thoroughly excellent
effort from the openers, the only blip being James’ doff of the hat to a
boundary surfing Ainsworth, smacking a woeful full toss straight to young
Turnbull. One brings two, in fact one used to bring maybe nine, one brought
no more today. With Howarth (22*) topping his non-average up as shadows
lengthened, the spoils of Sunday went to The MAD. Result aside, this was a
very enjoyable trip to a ground previously unknown, with the match played out
in excellent spirit throughout. Life is way too serious much of the time, so
more of the same next year, please. Though perhaps without any more trips to
the JR…. ‘R. Tinted-Specs’
