Welcome ladies and
gentlemen to the draw for the first round of the friendly cup. First out of
the ball bag is …… Hampstead Norreys. Well that’s a
stroke of luck for someone as the hosts provide an idyllic country pub prior
to the game, a delightful ground set in a natural amphitheatre and an
excellent tea. Rustle, rustle, clink, clink, the away team will be …… The
FFTMCC. So, it was that The MAD
had to make a fairly lengthy journey down the A34
and then several miles through rural lanes to eventually arrive at the
tranquil village of Hampstead Norreys. Who knew that such secluded places
existed so close to the M4? After an all too brief
stop at the White Hart pub, the team headed to the ground, which was one of
the best we have played on, being almost in the same league as Bridgetown if
only it were accessed via a foot bridge over a charming river. Being an
unseasonably warm day even for the end of May, the toss was going to be
important and with Captain Timms calling incorrectly, it was no surprise that
we were fielding first. Williams would later play a forward defensive and
accrue a dot ball. It was soon clear that
just like Bridgetown, set in a natural bowl, if a ball was hit along the
ground there was pretty much no chance that it would reach the boundary and
all the chasing fielder had to do was wait and the ball would eventually role
back down the hill towards him. Coupled with the long grass in the outfield,
a lot of running was required by the batsmen for not much reward. The openers started
brightly until C Roberts (8-1-30-1) produced the ball of the day, getting one
to nip back and remove the top of off stump, the end of A Dey for just 6. In
fact, it has to be said that everyone bowled well on
a helpful pitch offering some varied bounce. The shortened run-up is working
for A Darley (6.2-1-17-2) who justified his inclusion in 141% of fantasy
teams. M Reeves (5-0-13-1) bowled with great accuracy for no reward then
threw down some total shit to claim a wicket. Star of the show was
probably G Timms (8-0-39-3) whose mystery ball (what shall we call it, the zooter, looter, pooper) is drawing batsmen into false
shots and allowing him to claim his amazing third and fourth caught &
bowled of the year, already equalling the record for an entire season.
Another shout goes to J Pearson (5-0-22-3) proving that zero attendance at
nets or indeed any preparation whatsoever is no barrier to a great start to
the season. Only D Shorten (3-1-7-0, six wides and one off the bat) went wicketless,
but good economy and in any case, the skipper sees him more of a batsman now. Shorten (left) pondering the complexities of
catching a ball. The innings was not
without controversy with Russell Turner donning the white coat at one end,
giving two LBW decisions. No aspersions were cast on his impartiality,
especially as he would Wide his regular teammates at every possible
opportunity. Fair play though for turning up, under strict Doctor’s and
Wifely orders not to play, but still standing in the middle for more than 70
overs. It was a long old afternoon and the innings seemed to drag at times,
but The MAD took wickets are regular intervals. For Hampstead Norreys, the
tail wagged a little with P Troon-Smith (16) hitting some useful late runs down
the order. Despite two drinks breaks (one oddly, two balls before the end)
the Mad were very glad that the innings was curtailed after 37.2 overs.
Reaching 133 seemed a decent total given the pitch and outfield favouring the
bowling team. Despite the wonderful
food, the highlight of tea was standing on the first-floor balcony with a
panoramic view of the ground and the woods surrounding it, with Midge
probably depleting the local wildlife. It’s maybe not so impressive on a wet
and windy, cold afternoon, but on this day, we were more than happy to be there. Lee Ainsworth is sadly
missed this season, but in his absence other players seem to have stepped up.
Openers Pearson and Williams were looking comfortable until Pearson was
undone by the long grass and adverse slope. Attempting a ridiculous second
run, he was comfortably run out. There were rather unkind comments that Geoff
should be given out LBW, just to even the score a little, but he didn’t last long in any case. Brigadier Pearson drives during his “shattering”
innings of… 4. At 68 for three at the
end of the 19th over the game was right in the balance, until Howarth (50 n.o.) and Shorten (34 n.o.)
stepped on the gas. A MOTM performance from Howarth and Dave finally learning
to only try and blast the bad balls into the stratosphere meant the pair
bought the team home with 11 overs to spare. Hampstead Norreys only lose
marks for a non-functioning shower, but they’ve even
promised to fix that if we return in future. Immediately after the
game we were all straight back to the White Hart and it was great that
several members of the opposition came to join us. The friendly cup had lived
up to its name and whilst we march on to the semi finals we’re more than keen to take the cup out and
return for another friendly match next year. ‘Reevsie’
