Like two jilted lovers
finding solace in each other, The MAD teamed up with Wootton and Bladon on
Sunday for a quickie 35 overs and to bitch about the decline of friendly
cricket in general and the teams who had let them down in particular. W&B
were meant to be at home to Enstone and had booked a pitch accordingly,
whilst The MAD had a loosely arranged meeting with Headington Quarry. No
point in bad mouthing these guys too much as just about every captain and
fixtures secretary is no stranger to struggling to put a team together. Our current
fixtures secretary, Spam, reckons that’s now ten
matches this season he’s pulled together at short notice whilst skipper Gary
currently has eight players confirmed for the next three Sundays, tough
times. Gary: “Russ – this season has been ruddy
difficult, chap.” After batting our lashes
across a metaphorical dancefloor, The MAD rocked up at the Red Lion in
Cassington in plenty of time for a 2pm start. The Red Lion is a proper pub, a
pub where the landlord greets you and the land lady provides bowls of chips
after the match. Exactly the sort of place that is disappearing as fast as
friendly Sunday cricket. Holy shit, Gary won the
toss! Bringing to an end a run of eight consecutive
defeats. He was almost disappointed not to beat his own record and become the
outright worst tosser The MAD had ever seen. On an
unpredictable pitch he decided we were best having a look at it, so were in
the field. I have to say it was one
of the longest 35 overs I have ever experienced. For one thing it was blowing
a gale throughout, meaning that the ball was flying through at one end whilst
almost stopping from the other. Communication was almost impossible, with
instructions getting lost on the wind. The pitch was massive, especially if
the ball was hit straight and a bumpy outfield with
long grass meant that even the most firmly hit stroke would grind to a halt.
On more than one occasion both batters and fielders would slow down as a ball
raced towards the boundary, only to then have to
pick it up again as it decelerated rapidly. Added to this the boundary was
surrounded with almost impenetrable thorn bushes. A cluster of not very Fat Boys. Gary (7-1-51-1) opened
downwind with himself and soon got opener A Hambridge caught by Cartwright.
To his credit, the vast majority of his runs were conceded when he switched myself to upwind later in the innings. Turner and Father
Moo both dropped catches in the swirling wind and straight into the sun,
although Russ did a nice attempt at catching it with his neck. Fortunately,
the first aid kit wasn’t summoned. For W&B, the stand
out innings came from N Hambridge (81 n.o) and
congratulations to G Doggett (39) proving that it’s possible to construct a
descent innings entirely out of 1’s and 4’s. Dan Moo showed that he’s
adapting well to bowling 22 yards, rather than the 19 he does at junior
level, whilst Joe Moo again impressed behind the stumps. Finally, we’d dragged ourselves through 34.4 overs when Ben came to
bowl the final two balls. 34.5 was slapped by Doggett to Reeves in the gully,
which bought to the crease J Barrett who’d been sat
with his pads on watching a stand of 125 pile up. Ball 34.6 splattered his
stumps leaving Ben on a hattrick next time out. W&B had achieved 171
which was generally considered to be too much of a stretch given the
conditions. Much to ponder for Mr Walker – hat trick
immortality? It was great to see
Derek at tea, with Mrs H putting on a lovely spread. In reply Turner (17) and
Williams (25) got starts although they along with Cartwright, Maxi Moo and Mini
Moo all struggled as the run rate climbed steadily. If fielding had been
hard, then batting was more so with Reeves (31) and Webster (37) both out
(fucked) after running three consecutive 2’s. Unlike The MAD, W&B
had a couple of excellent shouts for MAD moment. High praise to C Wood for a
wonderful sulky silent cob after getting smacked for six by Williams, but the
award would surely go to N Haywood who attempted to throw the ball in
underarm from the boundary. Instead he threw it backwards over his head
beyond the thorny hedge. It’s in that field son,
through you go, hahahahaha. In the end The MAD fell
just nine runs short for a surprisingly narrow margin of defeat. It was then
straight back to the Red Lion for a proper pint in a proper pub garden. Perhaps
we should just play W&B, Appleton, Harwell and a
couple of others about ten times a year each, it works, keep it simple. ‘Reevsie’
