With college grounds
given over to the coronavirus and waist high grass, Isis hosted this evening
bash at a rather lovely Eynsham ground circled by rolling fields and some guy
on a tractor who decided the evening ambience would be magnified by the sound
of a buggered diesel engine belching black oil smoke. I mean, why do that
most essential task of mowing unused grass when the ground is deserted of
human life, like it had been all day until 17:30? A concealed stripper sneaks up on Polly Moon
(third from right)…. It was well over a year
since these two Sunday thoroughbreds had contested a game of cricket and
putting that into context, when you consider they used to play four or fives times a year, that is one serious drought of
neighbourly rivalry. It would be great to see old faces and renew sarcastic
comments and glib appraisals of each other’s talent, and it would also be
great that Russ seemingly wins nearly every toss and we always get to do what
we want in the shorter form of the game.
i.e bat
before the light turns to perpetual gloom and zombies and night terrors
emerge from the surrounding foliage…. Setting about laying
some solid foundations, Howarth went for platinum duck and Turner for 6,
however a ruling that wides and no balls count as two with no extra ball,
meant that Ian’s innings of wide-then-wicket meant he had actually faced 2
balls. So, a shit unmemorable duck as opposed to one
of the most lauded waterfowls, although the arguments surrounding it mean
this unmemorable silver duck will probably be remembered, and Ian’s
case, with bitterness. Harris chops one away. …meanwhile, Mike runs away from responsibility
(once more). Moving on from celebrated
duck talk (alas), Webster (38) and Pearson (42) played with aplomb in a
partnership worth 69, James in particular enjoying a rich vein of form and
perhaps annoyed he got himself caught with no retirement beckoning. Their
good work was continued by some slogging to cow from Reeves (10*), some
mature stroke play from Cartwright (12) and a Caribbeanesque
unbeaten 7* from Mr Harris. 123-5 after 20 overs and extra time gobbled up by
continual field changes by our hosts. The Isis riposte was
centred around a doughty fifty opening stand from Bowles (32) and Olly Walter
(31), the latter falling to a sharp stumping by Hotson off the wiles of Timms
(4-0-21-1). Bevan would then be run out for a duck and Bowles castled by
Reeves (4-0-19-1) to have the home team wobbling on 67-3. This wobble became
a sizeable tremor with both Blakeman (1) and Ponsford Jr (0) following soon
after as Harris (3-0-17-2) span some mastery in the gathering dark. It is
around this point in the game where all that time wasted shifting people
around in the field came back to haunt our neighbours, as heading out into
twilight to hit from the get-go is pretty much a no-no, even with
optoelectronic vision. Dwindling overs and a dwindling
sunset left Stanbury (12*) and Whiter (15*) well short in the end, despite
some shamefully generous fielding from Reeves, and thus the spoils of war went
to the pub team with no pub but very public about liking a pub. In summary, a great toss
to win and a solid team performance against a pretty handy
opposition. More than those plaudits though, it was just jolly nice to see
our neighbours after what seems like an age and to rekindle all those little
battles within the big pointless battle itself. Next time out? Golf in
October…. ‘Platinum Plus One’
