After last week’s pasting by the kids of Cumnor, this felt like the first proper Sunday match up of the season. The team travelled to the Red Lion (not that Red Lion, the other one) in Carterton for a pre-match socially distanced beverage. At the time of writing, different pubs are taking different approaches to avoid their customers getting ‘the sniffles’ as the Brazilian Prime Minister describes the current global pandemic. At one end of the spectrum, technologically advanced establishments are offering QR codes and mobile apps to facilitate beverage delivery with no human interaction whatsoever. At the other end, some are painting arrows on the floor whilst crossing their fingers. The Red Lion falls somewhere between these two contagious stools with plastic screens erected in front of the bar and a sheet of paper for the much vaunted ‘track and trace’.

Skipper Timms won the toss and decided we would do the fielding bit first. In an act of cunning / bravado / recklessness he took the unusual step of starting with himself in the hope of picking up early wickets. Instead of ‘up early wickets’ we were ‘the ball out of a tree’ as T Valentine smited the first delivery over the dense thorn bushes which surround the ground. However, Gary then demonstrated the art of captaincy by listening to his bowlers (A Darley 7-0-30-2) and moving Reeves to mid-off, just in time for G Doggett to lamp one in that direction.

Looking back, we really bowled well, with C Roberts (7-0-36-1) immediately into his stride and Rundle (6-1-21-1) picking up a wicket maiden. Only Reeves (4-0-32-1) challenged Gary for the buffet award despite a decent caught and bowled, but getting pulled by J Bishop for four consecutive 4’s. Ball of the day was from Darley to dismiss Hambridge, narrowly beating Vermaak (6-0-28-1) doing for G Edwards with one that apparently pitched on leg and took off (as in took the off stump not flew in the air.) Gary (3-0-26-1) certainly redeemed himself thanks in part to a stumping by Hotson. There was just time for Reeves to pick up The MAD Moment for a beautiful sliding tackle before booting the ball well over the boundary and into the undergrowth.

The non-tea interval and time for post lockdown-loafing loafing.

Bladon have big hitters right the way down the order and at times resemble a swollen rugby team, but through no little finesse, amassed 188 for 7 in their 35 overs. The MAD were going to need their 5th highest run chase in team history to win this one.

A quick word on ringers. According to the dictionary, a ringer is ‘someone who rings’ no that can’t be it, no ‘a person or thing which looks very like another’ as in Russell Turner / Mike Ashleigh, no that’s not right, here it is ‘a racehorse, athlete, or the like entered in a competition under false representation as to identity or ability’. There we go. No-one likes a ringer, the guy who plays for Hampshire seconds on the Saturday before hitting 153 out of 154 for Pub X on the Sunday. It has to be said that The MAD are the least ringer infected team you’re ever likely to meet. We would challenge anyone claiming that we have anything other than uniform mediocrity running through the side. However just occasionally, or maybe we’ll concede repeatedly against the same opposition, we’ll have someone who has a decent day.

Williams is carted off the field for failing to warm up.

Step forward James Pearson, stalwart since 2010, average of 23.17, bettered only by four (count them four) other current players, but a man who on his day can organise a run chase. In the early stages he was assisted by C Williams (37 n.o.) before he went full ‘Westmoreland’ going for a needless run and had to hobble from the field. After that Turner was looking good until comprehensively outdone and stumped by Doggett, there was no turning that ship around. Mr P was looking good for a century until on 84 he didn’t quite clear the infield and was gone. 84 in 81 balls was great work and got us within shouting distance. There was still a little work to be done but Howarth (38 n.o) and Timms (15 n.o.) are both having (shortened) seasons to remember with the bat, bought us home with a little over fours overs to spare. A Darley, promoted up the order to 6, probably had his pads on longer than he usually does, despite not making it out to the middle.

So, a brilliant day and a brilliant win against another well matched side. Take the good times when you can this summer.
