With the gradual
relaxation of the abysmal weather and the gradual relaxation of lockdown, The
MAD made the arduous, long distance trek to the adjacent ground of Queens to
play their neighbours. A ground famous for that win in 2021 against
this very opposition and a ground famous for being famous to bat on. How
times have changed. A changing of the guard,
a changing of equipment, a year of abandonment due to a pandemic, who really
knows… but Queens ain’t Queens anymore. The ball
doesn’t stay true and honest, the bowler doesn’t need to be top dog anymore,
now anyone can get things to pop and rip, and even Howarth can be nigh on
unplayable when he pitches the fucker. Sticking the home team
in, Turner watched his bowlers break a stubborn opening partnership
(Penhallurick 23, Beavan 22) before applying a noose around the Isis neck.
Shorten (4-1-11-0) came off his new advancing age run up, to showcase a
bewildering array of variety, Reeves (4-0-25-1) was clearly the best
left-armer on show, Timms (4-0-19-2) was sensational in flight and bounce,
Williams (3-1-12-1) the best we’ve ever seen by someone called Williams,
Rundle (3-0-21-0) triumphant in not giving way to his wreck of a body and
Howarth (2-0-7-1) sublime as he shuffled in at the death to have the Isis
98-5 after their twenty overs. Timms lobs some unplayable library footage at
Queens. Job done with the ball,
it was time to sit back in the comfort of your plastic, stackable chair,
bathe in the late evening sunshine and summer ambience, take in the poetry of
distant church bells and watch Pearson and Williams knock the runs off. At about the ninth over
the reply, umpire Howarth informed Pearson they could bat to a conclusion due
to a 50-retirement rule. Cue Williams (25) picking out the one man (young
Blatchford) on the Isis team who could sprint around from long off to mid on
to catch a steepler around his ankles. After an
erratic start, Ponsford Jr (2-16) then found the Arable End to his liking,
doing for Turner (6) and then Bateman (8). Shorten would then thrash one to
relax MAD nerves, then set them jingling again by being castled for 5. With Pearson (31)
deciding to give keeper Hyde multiple chances to catch him (of which he took
the last), it all left the Far from any Bloody Good requiring a simple 6 runs
off the final over to secure victory. A simple ask. Or so you would think. What it says on the tin(s). However, diminishing
light and being new to the crease never makes a formality an easy task. So it
was, with Reeves and Howarth watching dismissively from their synthetic
chairs, as Bullock (6*) and Timms (9*) failed to hack the necessary from a
Wyatt over thrown down to the Pastoral End. Isis won
out by 2 runs and “temporary” bragging rights to them. Goddamit. As ever, an excellent
match between two very well-matched teams, excellent banter
and humour throughout, and we look very much forward to drawing them in the
Friendly Cup next year in addition to the other forty matches we have now
inked. All other opposition is off the table for the foreseeable and good
riddance. ‘Signal Master’
