Last year was pretty shit and 2021 looks to ace that with matches lost to continual rainfall, Covid infections, a rogue groundsman and a (Friendly) Cup competition no longer fit for purpose. Thankfully, the country is opening back up, and despite gloomy scientific warnings our football firms are once again able to flaunt our crappy reputation on a European stage. If the Euro violence in and around Wembley wasn’t bad enough, poor David Beckham had to talk “soccer” with Kate Moss for half an hour, his mate Tom (Cruise) stuck in traffic heading back from the men’s singles final at Wimbledon….

Heady days in Wootton and Wallingford prior to kick off….

A week is a log time in politics.

A year is a bloody long time in a pandemic.

Thus, it was, on the day after Baby Spice announced she got hitched (and no longer officially “on the market”) and Gary Timms lost a virtual coin toss on FaceTime to scupper participation in the Friendly Cup Final, the team returned to where it all started in 2020 … namely the return of grassroots cricket after Lockdown I and Middleton Stoney.

Much had changed since the last visit to The Park, we were able to stand closer together, we weren’t that fussed with sanitisation, Geoff wasn’t about to have his car battery go flat and the Williams’ clan were safely tucked up in bed with the coronavirus.

Rundle and Reeves discuss average protection at the expense of going for a win.

Wasting little time before the sun dipped behind the trees, Captain Turner lost the toss and opted to let MSCC make the decision to bat first on a dryish track and lose two quick wickets. Darley (4-1-10-1) was excellent off his shortened run up, and Reeves (4-0-19-1) enhanced his reputation as the best left-armer in the club by bowling left-arm over.

That was about as good it got really, as M Ford-Longstaff did what he normally does, retire at 50 after riding his luck and smacking a few, ably abetted by a middle order gleefully tonking the ball through the buttery hands of MAD fielders. Debutant Brian Eade (1-32) did okay, as soon as an appropriate field was set, whereas Timms, Rundle and Shorten did less than okay, so perhaps just ok (without the ‘ay’ on the end). 134-4 and time to fanny about copying the scorebook and discuss the bizarre incident in the final over where 4 byes were awarded. This curious incident had S Vadivale (6*) firstly given lbw to one that bypassed the keeper off his boot, before being called back after protestations. Most odd. Even odder was the fact that no byes were recorded in the scorebook and so one can only assume Mr Shorten (2-0-20-2) probably copped the tax, and of course, no wicket. It can be a cruel game at times.

A Darley cracks one through midwicket in a chanceless innings of 4.

In reply, recent crocks Howarth (16) and Hadfield (4) tried to remember how to bat (after a month away), before choosing to do the inexplicable. We had stopping a shot and doing nothing (Ian), or… just doing nothing and watching the ball rearrange the stumps (Richard). Excellent stuff, guys, leading the way. Youth protégé Bateman (18) showed some real promise as Shorten (14) manhandled a few, however Turner (0) and Timms (1) completed a magical day out by going binary. Darley (4) would then put his talents on display for a watching (EBI) camera crew as Reeves (16*) and Rundle (15*) ran down the clock to protect their averages. 97-7 was not quite a ton, and certainly not enough for victory.

The pandemic has robbed us of many things, and most noticeable following the conclusion of this game, was the always excellent BBQ and huddled banter by the pavilion. MSCC still did us proud by stocking a table with free beer cans and we hope next year we can reciprocate by throwing some money behind their bar.

See you next year, lads. Always a pleasure.
