Let me make this clear: I have almost no memory whatsoever of this game. All I have is a fixture card and the dimmest recall of Psycho having some kind of spasm and whanging the ball off the back of a batsman’s head. Beyond that, nada. After foolishly and casually promising a report of this game, I have been receiving a steady stream of threats and abuse from Giant Duck and so, under severe pressure from our club mascot, I will try and piece together a report from the mere fragments I have to hand.

I know for a fact that Sydenham play at Aston Rowant, from where there is a nice view of the Chilterns to the east. Gigantic Red Kites circle overhead and pick up snacks from the field of play, presumably waiting for a bit of cricketing carcass to become available. I can see why they might favour the MAD as potential buffet material. A combination of age and propensity for injury would make us an enticing prospect for our winged brethren. This is why I generally try and field near Geoff or Bob if possible.

Spam somehow fluked this great shot of a Red Kite circling over the ground.

Darley and Bob opened the bowling. This, I think, is one of the few games this year where Bob got off the field without medical treatment being required and the scorecard says he bowled a couple of maidens but didn’t get a wicket. Darley did, and I expect it clipped the top of off stump as he got the champagne moment for it. I bet he also got straight driven for a few fours by that tall Sydenham opener who likes to give it a bit of a slap. Apparently, we kept them down to 108-6 off about 20 overs, with Pearson (3-23 – why did he get taken off after only 5 overs – those figures look lovely?) and Psycho (2-48) picking up some wickets. Jake took a catch as keeper, which makes sense as he did a pretty good job behind the stumps this year. Spam also took a catch. Somewhere.

Me talking bollocks to this Renon guy. That’s Jake scoring in the background.

It was in this period of the game that Psycho picked up the MAD moment award. I’ve just realized that I don’t actually properly remember Psycho’s moment but just mostly remember reading Jake’s report of it in an email exchange:

“Rundle’s exuberant follow-through takes him to silly mid-on, where he collects the ball, and finds both batters at his end.  Without a moment’s aforethought, in one swift movement, he collects the ball and launches himself towards the stumps at his end where it's impossible to run anyone out.  Amid cries of “keepers”, he realizes the heat-of-the-moment mistake, keeps the ball in hand, and, despite now lying on the ground, readjusts. The rest is history.”

I think the ‘history’ bit was the pinging the ball off the back of the retreating batsman’s head. If I am right, I also think he got the same batsman out the very next ball. This is actually quite funny. I am now laughing at the version of it I now have in my head.

Ha ha ha aha ahaha ha ha aha ha.

Here I try and hit the ball off the square, but probably failed. Geoff might remember (umpiring).

Anyway, I think we must have let things slip a bit because their number 5 scored 50 – probably having a bit of a swing and a bit of luck, we put down 4 catches apparently, and they ended up biffing 200-8 off their 35. Spam got an lbw which shows he must have bowled a straight ball for a change, or the umpire was incompetent. Either way, they all count. Pops took a caught and bowled too – I think I’m confusing it with one he took at Harwell and that was a pretty sharp chance. Maybe this one was too?  Let’s just say it was.

Russ was the skipper for this game, so I could tell before getting to that bit of scorecard that we didn’t get the runs.

Pops (31) and I (36) put on 57 for the first wicket which looks pretty good (is this game where the opening bowlers had the biggest disparity in bowling speeds with one of them bowling subsonic 10 mph pie and the other one hitting at least the mid-60s?), but then I’ve just seen how many balls I faced and I’m realizing why I might have blanked out any memory of this game.

Here I am, on the left, watching some guy with a headband bowl at Pops.

Joe (1) and Russ (5) came and went fairly quickly leaving Spam and Pearson a heavy duty target of 114 off 12 overs. They didn’t get it but obviously batted pretty well, putting on 69 at 7 an over. Spam who remembered how to score runs again this season got 44* and James 34, including a six. Having seen him bat before I reckon it would have either been a slog sweep over mid-wicket or a big straight drive. With his three wickets (why was he taken off?) as well, he had a pretty good day out and got the man of match award.

We lost by 42 runs in the end. I don’t think it rained.
