Do you remember one of those days where everything just goes right? Everything you try just kind of comes off, it’s all so easy and almost effortless. No, me neither. Neither it turns out does Bob, although he did enough here to win the MOTM award by a country mile.

On a beautiful summer evening The MAD headed off to Appleton minus Howarth and Timms. When was the last time neither of those two stalwarts were in the line-up? Skipper Russ won the toss and being just two weeks from mid-Summer decided that this should be one of those rare occasions to choose to bat second. The following write up is in accordance with the Appleton scorebook.

Rundle aims one at the back of Jack Bennett’s head.

Darling (4-0-25-0) opened up from the top end and was unlucky not to get an edge on several occasions as Gilkes and Bennett (37 ret) in particular tried to cut on a bouncy pitch. He looked more threatening once he had reduced his run up to a mere three steps. Well bowled as ever Darling. At the other end it was a different story, Rob (4-2-9-2) bowled a beautiful length removing Gilkes and Wastie. It’s the best I’ve seen him bowl, but don’t fall into that trap Bob, as we all have of thinking you can actually play this game, just enjoy it when it comes along.

Reeves (3-0-19-0) got pasted for a straight six by newcomer and wicky Tussler whilst Harris (3-0-21-0) also struggled. Seeing Bermaha (3-0-26-0) bowl, bought to mind a phrase from J Websters excellent Foreward in the award winning* ‘Never at this Level’. Watching Vermaak is ‘like watching an octopus in a washing machine’. There’s a lot of moving parts in his action and when they don’t all sync in harmony, wides and no-balls ensue. Rundle (3-0-15-1) tidied things up at a time when The Apples were looking to squeeze a few extra from the final overs. There were also two decent runouts, both involving Shorten pinging it in and bowlers Harris and Rundle doing the rest, which was not inconsiderable. Appleton had achieved 119 in their 20 overs, so exactly a run a ball would see us to victory.

Vermaak the octopus….

Turner (21 in 45 balls) anchored the innings against the excellent young opener Knight. At times it looked like he would threaten Rundles record from just a week ago of highest score without a boundary but fell eight runs short. At the other end, a procession of batters struggled on the bouncy pitch whilst wishing they’d packed a helmet for once.

After his excellence with the ball, Roberts didn’t face one with the bat, being shorn off for a diamond. Standing at the same end as Russ as the ball headed up the other, he did the decent thing and tried to follow it. Records show that he is only the second MADster, along with Emerson to suffer this fate on more than one occasion, having done so before, also against Appleton in 2011. Fair play though for going out to umpire immediately and turning down the opportunity to dismiss Russ stumped to a decent shout. You’re a better man than I am Gunga Din.

Relative newcomer ‘Swiss’ Dan Gerber showed that his favourite shot is the reverse sweep before succumbing LBW for 7. Please everyone, don’t try to follow his lead, it will only end in hilarious disaster and a place in the EBI section of the website.

At 50 for 4 in 13 overs, the game was effectively up, and Appleton could give a few overs to a number of their side. The MAD finally crawled to 81.

Congratulations Appleton. A couple of years ago they appeared to be in trouble, but are now a more than decent village team, mixing youth and experience, newcomers and old hands, with a vocal support from the sidelines. This fixture, along with a trip to the Eight Bells afterwards should long continue.
