It is now nearing the
end of October, leaves are falling on the ground and temperatures are
receding quicker than the Russian army in Ukraine. Conversely, James Bateman
is now lying on a beach in Australia without a care in the world, daydreaming
and occasionally texting a soundbite or two to say he may even consider getting
up and going to get a beer. It is now over two
months since this particular match was played and it still awaits a match report
of sorts, or something the scorecards can be attached to anyway. And it does
deserve something, being that it is the greatest ever MAD victory margin
batting second. Alas, it came directly after the Tour to the I-o-W and all
our roving reporters and [so-called] masters of the pen were busy writing fictional
tales of what or wasn’t achieved across the Solent. I didn’t play that day
but did journey past to witness an Appleton batting fiasco that Alex Jeffries
amusingly referenced as “an apple crumble” [amazingly we have never used that
descriptive on this website]. I also noticed the extraordinary makeup of his
team, an Appleton outfit sans any of the Gilkes clan, nor any of the Bennett
bros. I may [or may not] be right in thinking that this was first occurrence
in our thirty-five game rivalry that this came to pass? [Chairman Bullock
dives amongst his MAD history books] Corne bowling to prove that Bateman and Williams
didn’t do everything. On a glorious day for
batting, particularly if you can bat, Williams and Bateman set about the run
chase by smacking it about [a lot]. I watched about an hour of this smacking
about before deciding I was smacked out and it was time to leave. After
watching Williams clonk a ball over extra cover for six, I eddied along the
Thames towpath before stopping to enjoy a free jazz ensemble atop a moored
barge. It was a joyous collection of musicians and people who could [mostly] sing/rap
and it was there I received a text to say The MAD had won [erm, by ten
wickets]. Bateman never did complete
his fifty that day, nor did he win the MOTM award despite also taking a 4-for
against top order bats. Is it any wonder he opted for the sandy beaches and lifestyle
Down Under, an environment he could maybe feel appreciated? Well done anyway James,
and you Chris, you can both now finally salivate over the scorecards below.
For everyone else involved, thanks for coming [to that game]. ‘Passing Tourist’
