Congratulations to everyone who braved Oxford’s war on motorists and made it to the game. So long as you were prepared to avoid the Botley Road, willing to drive about 20 miles at 20 mph along Oxford’s major arteries and careful to park inside the gates of Magdalen college it was a doddle really.

Partly due to these obstacles, but mainly due to my own tardiness I was late to the game, arriving just as the players were walking on to the pitch (at three minutes to six it should be noted.) Having changed in to whites I ran on to the pitch for the start of the second over. Stand there said skipper Gary, which I did. Rundle bowled, Smith smacked it at not inconsiderable pace, I raised my hands and the ball stuck. ‘Thanks for coming Mike, you can fuck off again now’ said most of the team.

All bowling stats from the game should be treated with extreme caution, but Rundle bowled extremely well for probably 4-1-18-2. Roberts similarly bowled a couple of beauties for roughly 4-0-32-2. Reeves nicely for what is likely to be 4-0-19-2, or it could be 4-0-21-2.

It was great to see skipper Russ back (although he was not skippering) just 18 days and 28 pounds since he last played. Despite his multitude of long standing but recently diagnosed ailments he looked back to his old self and was not afraid to fling himself in front of anything the flew his way. Turns out this was perhaps not the best strategy as he’s since realized that he broke a rib attempting a low catch. It never rains but it pours etc. Rumours that he ran over a black cat on his way to the first match have yet to be confirmed.

Towards the end of the innings Timms was stationed on the boundary looking directly into the setting sun. Mr. Andre absolutely walloped it flat and fast in his direction. Gary, clearly blinded, stuck a hand in the general direction of where it appeared to be going when it left the bat and somehow connected exactly with the flight. It was a remarkable catch and nailed on for Champagne moment.

The words ‘not at this level’ have at times been on the lips of FFTMCC players during this fixture in years past and this year was no exception. Facing Oxford 2nds and overseas county level players, the FFTMCC still managed to take wickets at regular intervals keeping SCS to 139 for 8, which was a little above par when they declared their innings a couple of balls short of the 20 overs.

As the shadows lengthened Webster (15) and Hadfield (25) took to the field. The SCS openers bowled through, giving very little away. At the halfway point FFTMCC were on 43 and well off the pace. Chris Woo (11) impressed with both bat and ball, looking like he’ll fit nicely into the team. For the last few overs Reeves (19 n.o.) whacked a few, but despite him and Rundle (0 n.o) protecting their averages these bowlers could not rescue the situation. A total of 92 was respectable, but never really threatening.

Openers Webster and Hadfield disappearing into the bright evening sun….

Magdalen college ground is always a pleasant place to spend a warm May evening and with a selection of rolls and a few beers, players were happy to hang around before the long trip back along the roads of Oxford. Reeves was awarded MOTM. Paddy burst his bubble pointing out that he had achieved ‘net zero’ by scoring 19 with the bat and conceding 19 with the ball. Paddy also generously observed that he himself had also achieved net zero, netting zero with both bat and ball.
