The
very art of punditry was called into question this week as non-experts
claimed they had been once again led astray by continuing expert predictions
of a Jude The Obscure victory on the cricket field. A spokesperson for the
non-experts said, ‘Expert opinion is all very well, but where does that leave
us poor sods who know nothing? Something should be done, even though I don’t
know what. Any ideas?’ But a spokesperson for the pundits replied that ‘Only
the ignorant would suggest we are less than expert. We made the right prediction, it was only the result that turned out to be
wrong. You can hardly blame us for that.’ This
was scant consolation for The Jude, who against a metaphorical backdrop of
crucial sporting dramas being played out across the country and a real one of
big trees, a hedge and some kids kicking a football about in desultory
fashion, were forced to watch yet again as the victory cup was snatched away
and raised to lips not their own. A much-improved display by the pub eleven
was still not enough to claim the win against a proficient Isis team, who
despite firing on only three cylinders in the cold and blustery conditions,
got home by 66 runs. For
the third time in succession, The Jude bowled first, and yet again line and
length proved elusive. Although 43 extras out of an Isis total of 201
(Penhallurick 81 n.o.) put The Jude up there with
some of the great inaccurate one day teams of recent history, the added runs
and overs made it that much harder for The Jude not to once more lose heroically.
H. Jones (1-20) bowled well, and in getting a couple to lift off the pitch
reminded some present of Dermott Reeve, while A. Mann was economical, if
lacking in penetration. M. Thorburn (1-4) came on late to take a useful
wicket from his sole over. Captain E. Lester got a few to shimmy through off
the pitch, and R. Phillips warmed to his task. J. Moore must be commended for
his resolute insistence that he field on the boundary at a position
alternately straight hit and long-stop for almost the entire duration of the
last game of the Premier League football season, close enough to the radio
that he could transmit important score updates to the rest of the team. (Man
Utd champions, Charlton Athletic relegated. Shucks). High quality library footage from Cutteslowe
Park. It
was left to The Jude batsmen to make the impression that the bowlers had not.
This time H. Jones (53) opened the batting with E. Lester, and yet again
topped the scoring. C. Legg’s aggressive 49 was not far behind. M. Hurley (8)
was denied double figures by a lamentable lapse in the concentration of the
usually meticulous scorers, while M. Speaking
after the game, Jude all-rounder H. Jones said ‘Not in my wildest imaginings
did I think I would ever play for The Jude, so to score a 50 for them has
fulfilled a lifelong ambition. By the way, thanks to Sam for not giving me
out stumped when I was a yard out of my ground. Otherwise I would have only
got 33.’ When asked to comment on the day’s bowling, Jones commented, ‘It’s
not a bad wicket to bowl on. I was trying to bowl like Dermott Reeve, and I
got a couple to lift.’ Another
loss, then. But perhaps victory is not far off. As a lost dog will sometimes
travel thousands of miles across harsh and forbidding terrain to reclaim its
home and the warm embrace of its master, and the familiar territory where it
might sniff its butt and dig up its half-chewed rotting bones in peace, so a
cricket team will needs on occasion undertake a journey from darkness into
light, from wilderness into homecoming. A distant cry, both lament and
exhortation, rings out across the beer garden at the back of the pub. ‘We
are Jude....’ ‘Blocker’
