Complete this saying: “All things must____.” Pass? However, you do it, one thing remains certain: as long as there are slightly damp strips of poorly
prepared grass to stick a half dozen stumps into, there will be cricket in
England on a Sunday. And, a team by any other name is just as
eleven-membered. So it was that the oddly-sloping
field at Cowley Marshes saw the first outing for the newly-constituted Far
from The Madding Crowd CC, the same old sheep in a new mutt’s clothing, gone
now from Walton Street, from Jude The Obscure, along with the atmosphere and
the rest of the clientele. The Marshes groundsman had forgotten to lower the
blades on his mower, and the sun had taken a hike, but still it was business
as usual for the ex-Judesters, as a first-up loss
reaffirmed tradition and set the season on its customary course. Like so many others, however, this was a game that
The Madmen could have, and possibly should have won. Bodleian captain N. Millea won the toss against Madster debutante boss and
stalwart keeper M. Bullock, and soon The MAD were padded up and batting. With
a promising partnership between E. Lester (8) and A. Mann (7) quickly in
ruins, it was left to the remainder of the top order to flounder, and only J.
Hoskins (9) put up any resistance as the score belly-flopped to 48-8. But The MAD were rescued from a hitherto unheralded source, as
T. Smith (19 n.o.) and with him H. Jones (23 n.o.) pushed the total along to a defendable 96-9 after
35 overs. B. Mander (7) and A. Mander (7) got the same number of runs, as
each other. J.
Hotson’s mean bowling-machine haircut! With the slow pitch and outfield making batting
difficult, The MAD started in at the Bodleian with some confidence,
and were soon rewarded. A. Mann (2-6 from 7 overs) and S. Dobner (1-9)
put paid to the top Bod bats for a mere handful of runs and, bristling with a
new confidence, J. Hotson (3-19) cut a swathe through the middle order. Soon
the Bodleian reeled at 38-6. Certain victory had certainly never looked more sure, and even the spectator on the boundary seemed
confident about The MAD’s chances. Did the foot subconsciously ease off the
pedal? Did A. Mander surreptitiously take a team photo while the rest of the
players weren’t looking? Whatever the case, The MAD were once again proved to
be their own worst enemy, and a tally of 29 extras (as against 11 from their
opponents) cost them dear as G. Cooper (49 n.o.)
guided The Bodleian home with two wickets in hand. Wides aside, there were positives to take away
from this outing. An impressive captaincy display from M. Bullock left no-one
in any doubt, and the overall commitment in the field could not be faulted.
And this was actually the team’s best performance for an opening game of the
season. Further best performances are expected, with the possibility of a win
in the not too distant future. The Jude are dead, long
live The MAD! ‘Blocker’
