On a sun soaked day amid stifling heat, it was
with huge relief when MAD Captain, Mr. J. Hoskins, won the toss and elected
to bat. With a hamper of cold pitch-side Stella, it afforded most the team
ample time with which to top-up their suntans and add to their alcoholic
glows from a Saturday night out on the piss. Hoping
to reverse a recent trend of failings together, I. Howarth and N. Hebbes came
striding to the crease and would soon be striding back again. With the score
on just 8, Hebbes (1) was bowled around his pads by the accurate pace of Silu
(7-3-16-4). As he departed, Mr. Mander joined the sway, and again would be soon
leaving the sway, this time caught without troubling the scorers. Things then
worsened for The MAD with Howarth (4) spooning a dolly to mid-wicket and a
hapless M. Bullock (0) opting to use his pads instead of his bat. 24-4 and
the game heading for a decidedly early finish. Martin (49) would have had a fine fifty on this
day, but he didn’t. And then a MAD fight back of sorts, with
Skipper Hoskins scurrying alongside Mr. Westmoreland as the pair undertook a
sterling fifty run partnership. With Martin severe on anything down the leg
side, James simply hit straight from his leaden base. With Hoskins’ (14) eventual
dismissal, J. Harris (17) unfurled his expansive range of Caribbean strokes
whilst nursing Westmoreland to a richly deserved fifty. Or at least he would
have if Martin (49) hadn’t played over a straight one. A fine innings nonetheless,
and jug-avoidance secured. 91-6. In
the end some hitherto hitting and mooing from the lower order helped The MAD to
a total of 134 all out. T. Smith (3), B. Mander (16) and E. Xtras (29) all chipping in – and it was just a shame then
that when the innings concluded, J. Hotson (0*) was left stranded with a
maiden half-ton there for the taking. Mr. M. Shelley – one of the much-loved (ahem) Marlboronians. Tea – or just some cheap crap from the local
newsagents and a few hastily prepared pre-match sandwiches. Thankfully the
cider and lager to hand made the quality of the spread seem all the more respectable. Shorn of much of their regular pacemen [if
that is the correct term for military medium?], it was left to N. Hebbes
(0-38) and J. Harris (2-29) to spearhead The MAD assault. The fielding was
tight, the bowling accurate, and with the introduction of Hoskins (1-15) and Howarth
(4-17), the opposition slumped to 55-5. Victory was on! 55-5. 55-5. 55-5. Shoulda... shoulda… shoulda…. After
a sequence of maidens, much collective cheering and cajoling, The MAD
naturally felt the urge to fuck things up. The ball soon
started disappearing to the boundary, catches went astray, and shoulders
began to slump. B. Mander (0-16) and M. Westmoreland (0-15) toiled away, and
it was only a late lbw decision [Shelley lbw J. Harris 40] that checked the
Marlborough's chase. A memorable debut for Marco – joining the much
vaunted ‘Duck on Debut’ club. Unfortunately it was all a little too little
too late, with the Marlboronian horse well and
truly having bolted. So, in
conclusion, another MAD defeat. And no MAD fifties to report either. Nice one
Martin. ‘Spam’
