After clubbing an impressive 195-6, The MAD registered their second win
post-Tour against a team going by the name of Denner’s XI. “Denner’s XI?” I
hear you chirp. “Yes, Denner’s… er, XI.” Mr. Denner
– you heard of him? No? Me [us] neither. But apparently he’s famous / good enough
to name a whole cricket team after himself / them. Hmm… good for him. After a quick cameo by I. Howarth (28) and a cavalier slog by T. Smith
(18), this Mad innings was largely built around an impressive knock from Mr.
Westmoreland (66), who finally registered his maiden half-century for the
team at the X time of asking. In partnership with the in-form S. Hebbes (33)
he added 77 for the fourth wicket and enjoyed a smaller partnership with S.
Dobner (14) towards the end. When he finally holed out it was left to young B.
Mander (8*) and N. Hebbes (5*) to protect their averages. Time for tea. James assured us all
he’d definitely have got a ton on this day if he’d batted. Whilst affirming a decision to name a team after yourself / them, the
very least you can do is either back up your own self-importance and bring
your “A” game, or have a full team consisting of people sharing your surname [there
were only three Denner’s to note]. Whether Mr. R. Denner had a “B” game was
debatable, but it was definitely one of the latter letters of the alphabet he
displayed on this particular day. But hey, let’s not be too critical here,
after opting to open the batting for his team, our man scored a succinct 2 and
was involved in two partnerships of note (1 and 6 respectively). Not bad, not
bad at all. The nice graffiti-free
sign at Pembroke College Sports ground. After celebrating the (ahem) prize scalp of Mr. R. Denner,
The MAD were held up for a while by R. King (23) and P. Sauter (27), who both
eventually fell to the bewildering guile of Mad leggie, B. Mander (2-27). Following
Ben’s mesmeric exploits, Mr. S. Hebbes then ran through the Denner tail to
return the quite excellent figures of 4-7. The away team had been skittled
for 102 and victory went to the pub that was quite a considerable distance
from a reasonably annoying crowd. As a thought thereafter, given Steve Hebbes’ contributions with both
bat (33) and ball (6-3-7-4), would it not be a consideration to perhaps rename
our Club more appropriately? Maybe call it something along the lines of ‘The
Hebbes XI’? We do have two Hebbes brothers after all…. All those in favour? ‘Me’
