The weather was gorgeous. Absolutely lovely. England had become truly
Mediterranean and everybody loved it. As one looked out from the Pembroke
pavilion, you could see the stumps shimmering as a sea of clovers popped
under the baking sun. 2003 would go down as a real hottie; with this day was surely one of
the hottest. Indeed, if it wasn't for the small matter of a game of cricket,
one would have imagined the The MAD enjoying so
many alternative attractions that Oxford might have offered – namely punts
and the myriad of colourful pub beer gardens. No matter, they clambered into
their whites, were duly crestfallen with their Skipper losing the toss, and
furtherly bewildered when the ubiquitous opposition chose to field. “Field?
On a day like today? Are they mad…?” James contemplates the shambles to come…. Cashing in on the
perfect batting conditions, opener N. Hebbes (0) successfully navigated the first
ball before failing with the second. His dismissal allowed Mr. Westmoreland to chalk up a resolute 8 and
Mr. Mander a dignified 2, as The MAD stumbled in the sunshine to 37-3.
Thankfully, things did improve thereafter, with Howarth (42) and T. Smith
(18) eking out the boundaries as the scoreboard finally sprung to life. Mad
optimism would be short-lived however, with the pair inevitably falling in
quick succession – Howarth’s injudicious rake across the line pre-empting
Smith to smack one straight to a giggling green
Lemming in the outfield. Nice work, guys. Stalwarts
A. Mann (12) and M. Bullock (18) would offer some doughty resistance, but the
inability of The MAD lower order to protect their stumps [Dobner 0, Jones 5,
Hoskins 1] proved their ultimate undoing, all which left S. Hebbes (7*)
protecting his average and The MAD wilting to a less than hydrated 137 all
out. Tea and time to slake ones thirst and
recover from the heat and humidity. This The MAD did, before resuming the
action at some point and getting a total pasting. The pasting was thorough,
though details of it rather less so, as the scorebook somehow became a
peripheral item of interest. This is generally the case when (a) you are
getting a pasting and (b) you’d rather be doing something [anything] else in
the sunshine other than chasing leather. What was recorded other than the
fact the Lemmings won, and that Mr. Dobner (1-26) took the sole wicket to
fall, was that Mr. A. G. Mann failed to take a wicket and some
ginger-haired Lemming slapped a quick fifty before retiring [Mr. Hukins 52*].
But what else do you want to know? The Madding
Crowd total was never enough. Never in a million years, especially not at
this level, not on a glorious batting track with a lightning quick outfield
against a team stuffed full of quality University players who eat village
teams for breakfast…. Hmm. The ending to the contest was all a bit of a
blur…. ‘Spam’
