On a blustery September
afternoon The FFTMCC navigated their way to Aston Tirrold in the Oxfordshire
countryside for their annual brush with celebrity in Tim Henman’s back
garden. For some of the team it was their second or even third match of the
weekend and many had secretly hoped that the torrential rain that had
occurred in the morning would persist into the afternoon. Almost the end of the season, Dave…. In the event, there was
a slight reprieve of half an hour, but all too soon for some creaking bones
the players had to drag themselves out of the pub and towards the pitch. All
except for Paddy that is, who decided that a drive from Bournemouth to
somewhere near Didcot should include a full tour of the Oxford ring road and
a foray towards London on the A40. Whilst Tim finished his
Sunday lunch in the local The MAD assembled for the traditional ‘explaining
of the arcane time based rules under which the match
will be conducted’. These being further obscured this year by the delay in
starting. Roughly summarised these are ‘team batting first (TBF) will have
two and a quarter hours or until their innings is complete, after which tea
will be taken. Team batting second (TBS) will then have 45 minutes and 20
overs to pass TBF total where upon they will win the game. If TBS are all out
before passing TBF’s total, then TBF will win. If TBS fail to pass TBF’s
total but are not all out then the match will be considered a draw although
if Astons are TBF they will claim they have a winning draw. This process is
expressed in the equation below: dS/dt
= ĺ2.25TBF – (πr2 45TBS) + 20 It turned out to be a lovely day. Weather-wise
anyway…. With further showers
forecast a Cray supercomputer was on standby in case Duckworth Lewis was
entered in to the equation. When questioned as to why they use this procedure
in favour of the more usual limited overs format, the answer was simply ‘we
used to lose too many games in the past’. The suspicion is that they still
lose as many games, but no-one realises it now. Moo won the toss and
after careful consideration of the weather, the pitch and the calculations he
would be required to perform, decided that TBS was the way to go. The bowling was opened
by D Emerson (7-0-28-1) and J Pearson (4-0-13-0) who demonstrated immediately
that the drying wicket and long grassed soggy outfield were going to make
scoring difficult. Emerson’s first spell soon came to an end and he was
replaced by Reeves (13-3-28-5) whilst Pearson gave way to Hoskins
(16-0-60-3.) Hoskins seemed confused (even by the utterly confused standards of
the rest of the team) by the time based rules and seemed to think that the
tactic was to bowl as many overs as quickly as possible. At the other end
Reeves was getting about 30 seconds break between overs which was just enough
time to chase a couple of balls to the fine leg boundary and then drag
himself back to the crease to start his next over. Well done JMO and Reevsie – as nobody else could
be arsed to bowl. However the marathon
stint from Hoskins and Reeves bought good dividends as wickets fell at
regular intervals. There was a regulation catch behind the stumps for Dobner,
two for Howarth running forward and a very fine effort from Pearson. Skipper
Moo promised Emerson he could return just as soon as Reeves stopped taking
wickets, so Diamond had to just stand and watch as Reeves celebrated whilst
at the other end Hoskins pushing ahead decisively in the battle (with
Emerson) to take the most wickets in a season. Hoskins also passed A Mann’s
(13.1-4-26-2) seven-year record for number of overs in a match although Ant
would later claim that it’s all about the economy rather than the quantity. The Cray was powered up
as The Astons (TBF) lost their ninth wicket. Exactly how this would affect
TBS = 45m + 20o was unclear, but rather fortunately for the mathematicians,
The Astons managed to hold out to achieve 129-9. Howarth celebrates fifty and not winning us the match. Of the FFTMCC innings,
only Howarth (58) showed anything like the application required for what
should have been a fairly simple run chase. Pearson (5) and Leggate (3)
quickly departed before Howarth’s lively innings including three tremendous
sixes got under way. He was accompanied by Edwards (1) Mellor (5) and
Westmoreland (7) who between them scored a turgid 13 runs from 68 balls. Time
waits for no man and now the overs where being counted down (or up, who
knows?) Even this aspect of the rules caused confusion to The MAD. Ian received excellent support from his team
mates. With all six outcomes
(win, lose, draw, loosing draw, tie, match abandoned) still on the cards the
skipper gave instructions to push on for a result. Hotson (0) Dobner (3)
Emerson (6) and Reeves (1) duly obliged by chucking their wickets away in
just 23 balls. Any hope of a win, (loosing) draw or tie vanished and even the
weather couldn’t save the team as Hoskins (0 not out) was left stranded with
six overs to go. The MAD achieved 101 all out. Well played Astons, we
look forward to the continuing rivalry next year. T(ĺ2.25TBF – (πr2
45TBS) +) 20 cricket, it’s a winner. ‘Reevsie’
