In
2057, the Earth experienced similar problems to those experienced in the
Oxford area of England in the summer of 2012 – namely a dearth of sunshine.
Back to the future and the failure of the Earth’s Sun compels humanity to
dispatch a crew aboard spacecraft Icarus II to reignite the Sun via a
massive stellar bomb. The
FFTMCC are neither in a position financially, nor scientifically to follow
this future blueprint, and so it was, that with collective cheer and no small
relief, the sun finally did come out of its own accord on a sultry
evening in May…. In
the previous year’s encounter at this scenic hilltop ground, a complete
avalanche of runs had enveloped The MAD despite them tonking their highest
ever T20 total. Similar misgivings this time around were soon quelled, with
D. Shorten (4-0-18-1) nipping out the dangerous G. Day for 1 and J. Pearson showering
in his own sweat whilst returning superb figures of 4-0-20-4. Kedia (38 rtd) and Hicks (23)
would demonstrate some artful League prowess for the hosts, but again their
progress would be checked by the mesmeric, whirlpool of motions of octopus D.
Edwards (4-0-23-2) – a player seemingly back in love with his bowling. Traffic delays the start of the match…. Excellent
MAD fielding would be a feature of the innings, punctuated with regular cries
of encouragement and Howarth being peppered on the deep mid-wicket boundary.
It is always a joy to be involved when the spirit is so keen, especially when
the ball isn’t making regular visits to the adjoining rape fields. Garsington
eventually posted 136-8 off their 20 overs with The MAD bowling continued to
impress. Timms (3-0-23-0) seems now to be the reliable replacement for the Travelling
Wilbury, James Hoskins, whilst Mr T. P. W. Smith (3-0-26-1) can do a similar job
in his work boots with his mate Stella for company. Then there is the languid
C. Roberts (2-0-20-0), showing glimpses of a return in confidence following
his heroics in Woodstock a week or so ago. All in all, a very polished
display, with Captain Hotson marshalling things most adroitly. The
art of batting is all about a sound technique and a good frame of mind.
Howarth (bowled for 1) is clearly struggling with the latter, as are both the
unfortunate L. Ainsworth (who ran himself out for 5) and the ridiculous N.
Hebbes (who followed suit, but managed it off his first ball). Roberts (4) is
forever in a good place upstairs, but maybe lacking a few adjustments out in
the middle. Tall It
was 18-3 when the spotlight descended on debutant Russell Turner – and after
being informed that a “duck on debut is almost de rigueur”, he went against
Club protocol by stroking his way to a composed and eyebrow-raising 19. It
was perhaps a shame that the only real help he should receive in rescuing the
innings came from a dependable and carefree Edwards (19*). Note to Russell,
the guys in The MAD top order can actually bat (sometimes). The
FFTMCC have harvested many embarrassing records over time, but the potential
for another one was noted by a dapperly dressed Doc Mander, ambling past the
scorers as The MAD innings failed to realise a single boundary after 17 overs.
Not a single one. Nada. Zilch. Sweet FA. This in a format of the game noted
for power hitting exploits and many a lost ball…. Gary Timms (left) surveys the batting ineptitude
of his team mates. Cometh
the hour, cometh the man, and if you can’t find a man (or batsman in this
case) then I guess G. J. Timms will have to suffice. Following further
shambles from Smith (3), Pearson (6), Shorten and Hotson (both golden) the
club’s maligned and nailed-on number eleven arrived at the crease, and
despite an ironic build up to his first delivery, he kept it out with great
aplomb. The applause then turned to ecstasy when he swept his fourth ball to
the square leg boundary, just dribbling over the line away from outstretched
hands. Gary (5) thus ensured The MAD avoided the ignominy of a boundaryless
T20 innings. Caught up in the euphoria, he was inevitably out soon after,
leaving Edwards stranded (19*) and The MAD shot out for a disappointing 89. T. Smith takes in the views from cow corner. For
such a lovely ground boasting some of the best views in Oxford – who could
possibly be that downbeat about the result? Cricket is meant to be
played with the sun on your back. Just ask the crew of Icarus II,
particularly if they had the foresight to take any bats and balls with them…. ‘D. Boyle’
