What a rare and unexpected pleasure this Sunday’s game of cricket was, as a keen member of the Plantlife charity and devotee of cricket, I am rarely able to combine both my passions, but the trip to Aston Tirrold turned out to be the perfect opportunity.

Losing the toss and being asked to field first under rich blue skies and scorching heat, I immediately offered my services for patrolling the far side of the pitch. Here, in the shade, flanked by majestic oak trees and a cross section of brambles and weeds, I was to stumble upon my own little nirvana. It is fascinating what discoveries one can unearth at your quintessential village green, and Aston Tirrold was certainly no exception.

Opportunities were few and far between at the start of the Astons innings (D. Emerson 7-5-17-1 and M. Rundle 7-1-24-0), but thereafter I was able to climb amongst all manner of bracken and leafy canopies whilst looking for the ball. My favourite specimen I happened upon was a lilac flowered weed, going by the name of the Great Willowherb – it is a member of the Onagraceae family and can really add some vibrant colour to an otherwise bland surround.

The Great Willowherb – to be found at long on.

Perhaps noting my joy and preoccupation whilst scuttling around under hedgerows and behind park benches, bowlers G. Timms (7-1-33-3) and C. Roberts (3-0-28-0) served up a bewildering array of appetising aperitif, so I could further my diligent explorations. Carefully avoiding Burning Weed (stinging nettles), I would happen across many examples and offshoots of Canadian Thistle – a creeping perennial native to English fields and farming. It is considered a noxious weed which is hard to eradicate due to its extensive root system, which maybe explains its abundance in the locale.

Where I really got time to indulge my hobby was after the introduction of M. Reeves (7-0-52-4). Time and again I was able to slip into adjoining fields, parks and shadowed country lanes, on the pretence of looking for that silly red ball. Here I was fortunate to picture Christmas orchid (Angraecum sesquipedale) and Hedera Helix ivy – an evergreen woody climber I have been trying to introduce into my back garden, ever since some chavs moved into an adjoining property.

Hedera Helix – to be found at mid-wicket (cow).

All good things must come to an end, however, and with a late flurry of wickets, and no little matter of a certain degree of control (J. Pearson 3.4-0-17-1), my little forays into the bountiful, pitch-side foliage came to an end.

During the tea interval, I snapped a few exhibits for my personal collection, and then sat and admired the rape fields that shimmered in the background across the wheat and corn. What a beautiful view and what a relaxing panorama.

Deep cover, or square leg – depending on your jurisdiction.

Eventually, after the dismissal of J. Pearson (5), I was forced to don the pads and have a bat. Mercifully, this was cut short with my total on a similarly unsubstantial 5; thereon I engaged in a couple of laps of the boundary to once again admire the plant and wildflowers, before standing in as umpire as we contrived to lose.

Chasing 180 we lost by some 37 runs, with G. Carter (8), R. Turner (47*), M. Westmoreland (30), M. Bullock (10) and Reeves (9*) providing the other contributions.
