‘Will we, won’t we’
seems to have been the recurring question in the build-up to the last few T20
endeavours. For the third midweek in a row the 7 hours preceding the start of
the game played witness to a barrage of emails between fixture secretaries,
captains, and groundsmen regarding the chances of getting a game on. On this
occasion MAD fixture secretary I. Howarth was adamant the game shouldn’t go
ahead. ‘Call it now. Call it off now.’ he proclaimed at around 10:30 on the
morn of said game. It didn’t matter that he was fucking off to Greece for a
week in the sun; he was certain no game would be had. “I can see you Timms! Even from Greece!” Well, screw you Howarth.
Screw you indeed. Captain Timms and Blewbury’s most
amiable fixture secretary, Nigel Walter, braved it out – and reaped the
rewards. Granted there may have been the odd member of the Blewbury ranks
praying for a cancellation as messages were told of rain of biblical
proportions as all approached the ground. From the Mad side of things
Brasenose resident in situ J Hotson stated it’d been a sunny pleasant day. In
reality they were both talking shit. It was merely overcast.… All evening
long. Timms returned to form
after a temporary record losing toss winning blip the previous week and once
more dragged his team out to field first. A few weeks previous the inaugural
match between these two sides had taken place. A most jovial affair with both
teams keener on a beverage or two than the feast of cricket on show. The MAD
had emerged as the winners in the first clash in most part thanks to reducing
their hosts to 40 odd for 5 ten overs in. Could they repeat the dose? Library footage from Brasenose of our T20 Skipper
taking his job seriously…. As the first wicket went
down towards the end of the third over you could be forgiven for thinking ‘yes’.
However by this point Blewbury already had 42 – thanks in no small part to
the flagrant disregard John Barrett (38) showed for Emerson’s (4-0-40-1) line
and length, cheese and ham quiche. A first over of 4-4-6-0-4-1 certainly
showed intent. Emerson sort of had the last laugh as Leggate clung on to a
skier. Although in fairness Barrett only had one more delivery to play before
having to retire so.… A modicum of calmness was then restored as Pearson
(4-0-17-0), Roberts (4-0-23-0), and Timms (4-0-16-1) helped bring the run
rate back down. I say helped, as D
Barlow played his part too – blistering his way to 15 off 25 balls, before
being removed by Timms. Much to the delight of his watching team mates who
let out possibly the loudest cheer of the night to greet his demise. Sadly
for the Mad this just hastened the arrival of J Barrett mark II; James this
time. Not quite living up his brother’s 38 of 12 balls, Barrett II stuttered
his way to 31 (retired) off a massive 15 balls with a strike rate only just
over 200%. Pedestrian. Supported by Clark (29) and Allen (7*) Blewbury set
the imposing target of 133 off their 20 overs. Not before T Smith (4-0-31-1)
had Rawlings (1) trapped LBW in a game where LBWs weren’t really being
considered unless they were plumb…. Must have been plumb then. Library footage of D. Emerson who got bitch
slapped whilst bowling. The MAD’s young (in
relation to the vast swathes of old fookers that
play) skipper trusted in youth and sent out the two youngest members of the
team (squad). With 21 runs coming off the first 2 overs it looked like it may
pay off. When Ward (15) fell at the end of the 3rd, Turner (31
retired) joined Hill (10) to consolidate the innings. With 6 overs down and
with 42-1 on the board The Mad had reason to be cheerful. Briefly. After Hill
went H Scott followed immediately with his maiden golden. Binary Leggate (1)
wasn’t too far behind…. Uh huh, how good a name is ‘Binary Leggate’? Pearson (10) joined
Turner in the middle in attempt to take the innings into overdrive and their
run a ball partnership of 28 got The MAD back on track. 50 odd off 6 overs
was always going to be a tough ask but there was still some batting in The MAD
warehouse. After Emerson (3) and Bob (2) came and went it looked even more
unlikely – the latter run out despite good intentions. Smith (15*) provided a
late onslaught and Hotson’s tickles added 5 more before skipper Timms arrived
at the crease. He duly watched the one ball left of the innings get hoiked
back over his head before running an obligatory single that took The MAD to
111 – some 20 runs shy. Library footage of R. P. Turner batting…. You’ll note there has
been no mention of the Blewbury bowler’s figures. Have a glance at the
scorecard and you’ll see why. Two overs for all bar the keeper with wickets
and runs shared out. The only notable anomaly being Allen’s 2 for 3 off 2.
Over than that, be it Wigley’s darts, Ray’s lasers, Walter’s grenades or
Hillier’s tweaks, there was little to choose between the bowlers. So it is left at 1-1
between these two new acquaintances – I think all and sundry are looking
forward to next season’s battles. Perhaps even to extending them…. The only thing slight
down side is that young Nick didn’t twat 40 odd off 20 balls so I could
entitle the match report ‘I Found My Thrill on Blewbury Hill’. Idiot. ‘Sue Donim’
