Still bearing the physical and mental scars of the season’s previous encounter, the FFTMCC arrived at Brasenose ready to renew their old rivalry against Wootton and Bladon. For those who can’t face the trauma again, or otherwise be arsed to read the match report of 12.5.13, this was the rain affected, reduced 20 / 20 affair in Woodstock, although to describe this match as rain affected would be like describing the Titanic as ‘iceberg affected’.

Wootton & Bladon’s superb May playing surface….

Discussion beforehand revolved around whether the game should be 35 or 40 overs, although as we shall see, such discussions are currently immaterial on any occasion when The MAD decide to bat first. Martin won a rare toss and decided we would chance our luck first on a mildly damp, but drying pitch.

Despite not playing in the corresponding fixture, openers Carter (0) and Pearson (11) had heard the tales of frost bite and hypothermia from their colleagues and were in no mood to experience the same fate first hand. Therefore at the first sight of a dark cloud overheard, Geoff thrust his pad in front of a straight one and was duly out lbw. Pearson played nicely, with a few flowing off drives, until sensing a sudden drop in temperature, decided to spoon one to mid-on and get quickly back to the safety of the pavilion.

Howarth (17) arrived at the crease looking to extend his runs scored in July in to double figures. However, after a few lusty blows he saw some cows sitting down and therefore decided to try to hoick a straight one. Russell (0) had endured the worst of the weather in Woodstock and was therefore anxious not to repeat the experience. Placing the ball neatly to the fielder at backward point he called ‘yes’, which was obviously short for ‘yes, I have no desire to prolong my innings any longer’.

M. Reeves dispenses with the notion of guiding the team to a decent score (caught).

Westmoreland (6) thought he spotted an umbrella on the towpath and wasn’t hanging around to get soaked to the skin again, so decided to play down the wrong line. Dobner (18) was perhaps the least afraid of a bit of dampness, but eventually smacked one very straight and into the hands of C Poole. Recognising that C Poole was an excellent catcher, Reeves (5) immediately saw that his best chance of staying dry was to lob one gently is his direction, now that Mr P had his eye in and his confidence up.

Watching with envy as their colleagues sat snug and dry in the pavilion, there was no way the tail enders of Timms (0), Emerson (3), Roberts (2 n.o.) or Smith (7) were going to risk getting wet, even though the clouds were now departing and the sun was shining through. You can never be too careful in late July. So done and dusted in 25 overs, for a score of 77, even if things do cloud over later on, we should be OK.

Happy faces abound during another stellar MAD outing.

As W&B emerged to start their innings it seemed a formality that they would reach their target with little trouble. Emerson (5.3-2-19-1) had other ideas, roaring in like a man possessed. Skipper Moo adopted a very sensible tactic. With one or both eyes on the sky he decided that one way or another we’d get this over ASAP, so set an attacking field including two slips and a gully. Emerson didn’t need any of that, clattering T Clapham’s (7) stumps at the first opportunity.

From the other end Roberts (4-1-20-3) was also playing a blinder. Two of his finest deliveries ever, accounted for the next two W&B batsmen, clean bowled. When a third wicket that over went to a neat caught and bowled, nobody, least of all Bob could quite believe what was happening. It appeared that W&B were as haunted by the early season soaking as The MAD. 18 for 4 turned to 46 for 6 as Reeves (5-0-13-2) added to his season’s haul. W&H had clearly been inspired by the shot selection from the Mad as they also tried to smack straight ones when plenty of wayward deliveries would have served much better. Timms (6-0-9-1) kept things tidy and perhaps showed how difficult it was to score against line and length in the windy conditions. Pearson (2-0-16-0) looked out of form and the flame that had briefly flickered was extinguished, but not by any water, instead by G Doggett (39 n.o) who represented the only batsman able to make use of a track which was much better than the 165 runs for 17 wickets suggested. W&B reached the required 78 in a little over 22 overs.

Some drunk off the street wanders out for a bat.

So a nice early finish and a dry walk to the nearby pub. Man of the match and champagne moment both went deservedly to Bob, with the minimum of discussion. Just as that was concluded, what would you know, the heavens opened. There you go, all The MAD’s good work in dispensing with the cricket in a timely manner were rewarded as both teams were able to scuttle inside staying bone dry. So phew, dodged a bullet there then, no bad memories from this one.
