Think of the great
unfinished works of history. Think Schubert’s 8th Symphony, think
the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, think the original 1978 animated version of
The Lord of the Rings. Now add to that list the 2016 visit of the FFTMCC to
Appleton CC. Or not. It all looked quite
promising as we turned up to The Plough for a pre-match drink under blue
skies and fluffy white clouds. It was still nice as we changed in to our
whites and learnt that skipper Timms had lost the toss and we would be
fielding. It was even a little warm and humid as we chased the ball around
for 40 overs, conceding 210 runs. Today we welcomed player
#138 to the fold. Nicholas Patrick Parnell-Smith, friend of Jamo and possibly
The MAD’s oldest debutant at 60 years, 233 days. There’s hope for us all,
even Geoff. Player #138 Mr Parnell-Smith – making Geoff feel
a whole lot better about life. Highlight of the
Appleton innings was a 99 from J Biggs, including 9 sixes and 5 fours. He
then decided to ‘do a Howarth’ and get himself stumped one run before a
historic ton. Never mind mate, if your career goes the way of Howarth, you’ll
be a shoe in for the award for “something other than actually playing
cricket” come the end of the season. Well done to G Carter behind the stumps
for a MOTM earning moment. A notable mention also goes to Alex Naughtly, for
a cultured 34, highlight of which was dispatching G Timms for her first ever
six over a long leg side boundary. G Timms (4-0-41-2) had
an up and down day. Taking buffet and getting hit for a maximum by
aforementioned A Naughtly was a downer, but after doing for J Biggs he
delivered the ball of the century / day which was way too good for M Godwin,
sending him back for another FFTMCC
golden. He then delivered some toilet down leg side to avoid a hat-trick. Andrew “lucky” Darley here drives a beauty over
third man. I’m not going to say
opener A Darley (8-0-37-0) was unlucky. I’m not, I’m just not, but he did
bowl better off his short run-up. It was good to see other opener J Newman
(8-1-36-2) back today and it is believed he was bowling without tic-tacs. At one point he appeared to stumble during his
run-up with a rumour that he fell down a rabbit hole. This opened up the
possibility of a whole Alice in Wonderland themed match report, which has
been sadly ignored. Hoskins (8-0-49-1) did
well to get opener E Bennett caught by G Timms, who today wisely decided to
cradle the ball in his hands rather than his bollocks to snaffle the catch.
Talking of snaffling, the only winner today was R Turner, who rather than
playing two inning with one tea, decided to take two teas, with just the one
innings. Other good catches were
by Ainsworth to get champagne and by Moo, who went down as if shot, after
already doing his hamstring again. He did at least come up with the ball, but
that would look to be his season done. Another good shout for champagne was
as Moo went hobbling after the ball. Appleton failed to look beyond the
injury to see the man and decided on a risky two. Moo’s leg might be screwed
but his arm is not as he riffled the ball in for Geoff to whip off the bails
and leave J Bennett shaking his head as he trudged back to the pavilion. R. P. Turner (8) would later leave as skies grew
darker…. Reeves (9-2-33-0) showed
that club finances are in safe hands as he failed to count to eight
correctly. Good of the Appleton scorers to watch him shuffle through an extra
over. Howarth also helped him out by chucking the ball over the rope for one
of J Biggs’ maximums. Finally it was left to I Howarth (3-1-17-1) to take his
tally of blonde haired female victims for the season to two (that we know of). Only as we broke for tea
did the first few spots of rain start to fall. As The MAD took to the field
it got a little more persistent. As Turner (8) was bowled it got a little
harder. Darley (5) and Howarth (2) were looking to force a result (but not a
positive one) as they both hit skiers. Lee (10 n.o)
stuck to his task to be joined by Nick P-S (0 n.o)
who avoided a duck on debut just long enough for the drizzle to turn in to
rain. Even the most optimistic players couldn’t point to anywhere in the sky
that looked anything other than miserable, so that was it, we were done. There was just time to
return to The Plough, smash a lamp and talk about cricket when it’s not
affected by rain. So thanks to Appleton and Tom Crowe for raising a team,
welcome to Nick and ……………………. ‘Reevsie’
