Shorn of plenty of
regulars (who isn’t busy on the first Sunday in July, right?) The MAD
nevertheless made the trek to Harwell for what turned out to be a very edgy
contest. Not in the spirit it was played in, that was top notch as always vs
this particular oppo. There were just a lot of edges. Some even counted. The
batting ranks were depleted but The MAD were bolstered by a debutant in Chris
‘Pops’ Williams and a relative newbie in Saffer,
Cornelius Vermaak. A bona fide batsman and a jack of all trades all rounder respectively, by all accounts. Well, s’what Darley and Psycho said. The obvious decision
would be to put the oppo in and try and limit them on the mahoosive outfield
up at Harwell. So, with the toss lost, make shift openers Turner and Hotson
strode out to the crease. 17.5 overs and a best opening partnership of the
season (67) later Hotson (17) would stride back after a job well done.
Impudent flicks, consummate pulls, and authoritative blocks. Turner (57) was
in full flow at the other end, securing his maiden half century of the
season, in a high pressure situation. The MAD opening bats had done a more
than decent job but the Harwell opening bowlers would be happy with their
work too. Honours even in the early exchanges. Edge of the seat stuff. First change bowler J
Timms (8-1-26-1) would at first flummox scorer G Timms (spelling your own
name can be tough) before making the breakthrough. Mad finisher-in-chief M
Reeves would head to the crease about 18 overs earlier than usual and, after
a sprightly 15 he would depart roughly 15 overs too early. When Turner’s fine
innings came to an end, given out LBW for the 645th time in 2017, FFTMCC
would sit on 106-3 with 12 overs to go. A platform even the space shuttle
Challenger could surely launch from. With the newbies in at 4 and 5 and with
both beginning their innings dot, 4 things looked promising. That said,
I once saw a lady who looked lovely at first glance. From behind. When she
turned around, not so much. Almost as soon as their innings’ had got going
both C Williams (8), The MAD C Williams and not the Harwell one, and Corne
(5), The MAD’s Corne and not Harwell’s Cordy (who is also their C Williams),
met with premature demises. Turner (batting) finally gets past the 20s. Skipper Timms (15) and
keeper Bullock (23) would swipe a few in taking The MAD to 150 odd with 4
overs to go but opener L Gallington (7-1-29-2) would return to take 2 wickets
for 4 runs in his final 2 overs. Some top scampering from Newman (6*) and
Hoskins (2*) would leave the total at 166. A solid effort no doubt but given
that only 19 runs came off the last 5 overs a total possibly 15 or 20 shy of
where it should have and could have been. Tea was more than
pleasant. Newman (8-1-22-2) would
be miserly in his opening salvo with batsman playing and missing left right
and centre. On the odd occasion the batsman played and didn’t miss. J Wheeler
(1) providing a perfect example of this as he champagned a low edge to a
stunned Timms at wide first slip. Shuja would also find his edge on a number
of occasions. Once off the bowling off Roberts and into the gloves and once
off Newman into the very same gloves. He would stand his ground both times.
On the first occasion Bob had managed to position himself right in front of
the umpire so a not out decision was understandable (from the umpire’s point
of view, which he didn’t have). On the second, well, who knows. Shuja would
edge once more wide of the gloves for a streaky 4. He knew they weren’t byes
so more questions arose than got answered. Credit to Harwell stalwart S Boag
for his apologies and genuine disappointment at the actions of their number
3. Batsman Hotson tumbles forwards over the
undulating land. Unfortunately for Shuja
(17) he’d made Newman a touch angry and his stumps bore the brunt of that
anger shortly after ‘Edgegate’ (which I think is on
the Central line near Walthamstow). Boag (14) himself would fall to decent
snag from MOTM Turner off a chronically underbowled
Rundle (4-0-18-1) leaving Harwell on 69-3 at the half way point. Who would
win from here? ‘Edge your bets now please! Khan (49) and Hawkes
(45*) had settled in well, putting away the bad balls and rotating the strike
and, in the latter’s case, getting dropped on 0 by Timms off a “sharp” caught
and bowled chance. That may well have been the archetypal ‘catches win (or in
this case lose) matches’ example. Khan had gone back to Hoskins’ (8-1-32-1) a
couple of times and flirted with danger in the process. He went back a little
too far when on 49 and gave his stumps a got old thwacking. Shame. For him.
At this juncture a suspicious Harwell team enquired as to whether the
gentlemen on the boundary near the pavilion were with us. Some theft in
recent weeks arousing said suspicion. One was, the other wasn’t.
No worries, the one that wasn’t with us was with them. He was their Smithy,
ours was our Smithy. All very clear. On the pitch Bradley (4)
upped both the run rate and wicket rate in consecutive balls after misjudging
a Timms (7-1-37-2) “pearler”. Harwell captain T Gallington would continue
this trend but doing rather more for the run rate than the wicket rate with a
swift 16. He would join in the fun by eventually edging one into the gloves
of Bullock and walking before the umpire needed to make a decision. That’s
how it should be done. Kudos. Timms’ catastrophic last over would yield that
wicket but would also go for 16 runs. Add his earlier drop of Hawkes into the
mix and I know where I’d be laying the blame for this defeat. Harwell had
definitely edged in front at this stage. Reeves and the returning
Newman did their best to strangle the Harwell momentum but in truth the game
had already gone. The hosts reached their target with two and a half overs to
go. The sort of time you could get 15 or 20 extra runs in. A most pleasant
drink was enjoyed with the oppo in the Cherry Tree after the game and rumours
were abound that a match report that actually talked about the match would be
written. Surely not. ‘David Howell Evans’
