With Dave Shorten otherwise
engaged in an essential Boars Hill
poetry recital, Brigadier Pearson once again stepped into the breach. His
first duty was downplaying the significance of the Queens College pavilion
being shut, the changing rooms of secondary importance to that of the bar. Of
course liquor can be procured from an off licence on the Abingdon Road, but that
would be to railroad the groundsman’s profit margin, henceforth, and quite
rightly, Team MAD had planned for the bar, albeit one of the open variety. James’ reminder that “we
are here to play cricket” was met with the type of joyous embrace one
ascribes to a bottle of corked wine. On a sweltering evening,
Pearson’s popularity took another blow to the testicles after announcing The
MAD were going to spend the hot half retrieving the ball. There would also be
no retirements, although this
particular ruling soon looked obsolete following Jan Webster’s withdrawal. Having
intercepted a bullet behind bowler Ainsworth (3-0-14-0), the word “FUCK”
post-fixed with an exclamation mark gave the watching towpathites
an insight into the resultant damage. With only injuries,
dismissal or death resulting in a trip back to the pavilion, Westmoreland
ensured O. Walter (55*) avoided the ignominy by grassing one neither of his
kids could possibly drop (Reeves 4-0-18-0 the ecstatic bowler). Eventually
someone did head back however, Blatchford Jr (23) somehow slapping a Timms
(4-0-20-1) half-tracker into Ainsworth’s juggling circus at short cow. By and
large though, Isis seemed content to watch Olly plod along, relaxing back
into their plastic thrones and reminiscing about their recent tour to Exeter. Hoskins (4-0-26-1)
bowled with his customary guile, Pearson (2-0-8-2) moreso, and if Howarth
(3-0-26-0) hadn’t bowled three
consecutive full tosses, he’d have been lauded for a tidy spell too, but he
did, and each one was deposited to the boundary. Isis setting a final target
at 113-4 and the bar still closed. Turner displays an artistic pull. After a dotless
blitzkrieg from Hill (15 off 8 balls) and a typically energetic 6 from
Westmoreland, The MAD run rate began to plateaux, with a succession of
batsman fannying about before getting themselves out. Quite how Turner (15)
missed a ball without the inertia to reach his crease is anyone’s guess, and
listening to Ainsworth (11) bitch on about the elevation of the sun after
going walkabout was risible. Howarth’s (18) attempted glance off a straight
one suggested he was suffering Greek sunstroke, whilst Timms’ (1) decision to
play a day early brought the house down. 79-6 off 16.1 ovs. With the pavilion bar
now open, a degree of urgency crept into The MAD reply, Reeves (10 off 6
balls) hitting out before listening to his teammates. We are all experts in the art of running,
sat some hundred yards from the action and encouraging his suicidal demise. A
quick glance at Mike’s dismissals this year and it would appear he really is his own worst enemy, or
would that be his partner(s) in crime?
Earlier action as Westmoreland faces Alan East. Major General Pearson
has hardly caught fire either, caught out more regularly than Wynona Ryder on
a shoplifting spree, but here he displayed admirable resolve in leaving a
sole boundary required off the final six balls. Let’s get with the action… 19.1 Wyatt
pitches one up and a swing and a miss from Pearson 19.2 Wyatt
pitches one up and a swing and a miss from Pearson 19.3 Wyatt
pitches one up and a swing and a miss from Pearson 19.4 Wyatt
pitches one up and a swing and a miss from Pearson …stealing ourselves away
from the action, Ainsworth had announced somewhat prophetically after the
first ball, that if James (22*) were to swing and miss at the first four, “his
fucking head will go.” 19.5 Wyatt
pitches one up and a swing and yet another miss from Pearson Regardless of what James
did with the final delivery, his partner Mr Hoskins was dashing down the
other end…. 19.6 Wyatt
pitches one up and a… WIDE!!! After Hoskins scampers
through for 2 wides, it left a further 2 runs required for victory. With
hands now clasping MAD heads and the unthinkable reality of a 0-4 Isis ledger
becoming a very real possibility, the tension became unbearable. One final final ball
to go, but whatever happens, DO NOT LOSE THIS FUCKING GAME!!! 19.7 Wyatt
pitches one up and a swing and a… EDGE from Hoskins!!! With the ball slicing
behind keeper Jacobs, Hoskins (3*) completed his second before the mobbing off
his teammates. On an evening where some recited other people’s poetry, James’ simply seized the initiative and
utilised used his own poetic licence.
