The 2018 World Cup will
be remembered chiefly for an overhyped England team not adhering to being
crap and somehow managing to get to the semi-finals of the competition by
beating nobody of note. It will also be remembered for Harry Kane winning the
Golden Boot with six goals against nobody of note and the UK populace
watching the drama unfold whilst basking in glorious sunshine in beer gardens
or festivals. Oxford…. South Parks. Then there was the
distraction of Wimbledon, strawberries, Federer, Henman Hill, Murray Mound,
Queeny and that Serbian fellow (Djokovic) who conquered his mental demons and
a busted body to reclaim his crown. Well, at least he beat that juiced up
Spaniard that dodges more drug tests than the SKY cycling team. So where did cricket fit
into this equation? Nowhere really. The ODI England team have quietly gone
about their way slaughtering a truly terrible Australian team 5-0 and then
seeing off the Indians with a brand of aggressive cricket first seen at
Tetsworth in 2009. Which is way more than the Far from the MCC have achieved,
cancelling most games on days of thirty-degree heat and aligning themselves
for depression when autumn kicks in realising it was all one big waste. They
have made the Friendly Cup final, although their win against the Isis would
need carbon dating now…. Roll on to the last
vestiges of July and that small village of upper class inbreds belonging to
Appleton rolled into Brasenose promising one of those rare commodities this
year called a game of cricket. Shorn of a few notable regulars, the visitors
opted to bat first on a track harder than Anthony Joshua’s right hand and
progressed serenely as Skipper Shorten rotated his bowling. Actually, he rotated it as far as he could, with keeper
Carter the only absentee from bowling duties, preferring as he does to watch
everyone else run up and down and throw shit down the leg side. Standouts were the
capricious Webster (1-10) in harness with both Reeves (0-3) and Williams
(0-4) with their economy, although the latter were perhaps aided by batsmen not
fully understanding what the fuck they were doing. Turner (1-14) took a rare
wicket with a pie hit into oblivion, plummeting to Earth into the casual mitts
of Shorten ambling on the deep long on boundary, the latter (1-18) taking the
only other bowling wicket with the
one ball of merit he threw down in spin mode (we’re all spinners apparently….) Lobber Timms and lobber Shorten, oblivious to
Jake enjoying a shit on his deckchair. With Appleton completing
120 runs in total the intermission allowed people to moan about pitiful
fielding contributing to wasted Fantasy Jokers. Howarth, Carter and Shorten
were poor, but Timms’ caught and dropped beggared belief, the blame apparently
lying at the feet of Eddie Vedder and his Pearl Jam
gig the evening before. In reply, Emerson (10),
Reeves (1) and Hotson (0) failed to see off the first two and a half overs,
the former doing the bulk of the scoring with the edge of his bat. Thereafter,
Williams and Webster (both 32 ret) laid their stalls out and batted with the
sort of aplomb reserved for batsmen mindful of a decent end of season
average. Webster is a true enigma, the needle on his form barometer lurching
wildly between the sublime and the truly fucking terrible. After a brief cameo from
Pearl Jam (10) the advice and tutelage under Geoff Carter came to the fore as
Howarth wandered in front of his stumps to get triggered for 15. He stood his
ground, naturally, before it was explained to him that a ball missing the off
and leg stump generally means it’s crashing into middle. So most definitely
out, though not bowled though. Sorted. Eddie showcasing his moves on stage. This left Shorten (7*)
and Pearson (8*) to knock off the remainder to ensure The MAD’s T20 campaign
continues to groove flowingly along the tracks of success with only those
early season bumps to check the campaign. An enjoyable evening
against enjoyable opposition, who like ourselves,
paper over the cracks of inadequacy by stating that they don’t take the game
too seriously. ‘Geoff II’
