This was the first time
the FFTMCC had played at Wheatley Campus and it may be the last. Oxford
Brooks University are relocating to Headington in the next few years, the
acreage given over to rampaging housing developments that seem to be gobbling
up most of Oxfordshire’s green lands. Pretty soon there will be no green in Oxfordshire
left, just concrete and high rises everywhere and a crappy road network unfit
for purpose. Oh, that’s already happened, hasn’t it? This new fixture in The
MAD calendar came about on the back of a conversation that fixture secretary
Ian Howarth can no longer remember, so that’s that sorted then. It also never
happened as it was scheduled to clash with England’s World Cup match against
Panama, but then did happen with both teams agreeing to field ten men
sometime after the final whistle sometime before 4pm. Situated amongst
sprawling dilapidated offices with housing given over to heroin users and
squatters, the ground itself is quite charming, flanked by trees on one side
and a rather romantic old pavilion with a shagged scorebox on the other. The
scorebox may even work, but some plastic numbers on a plastic frame were
given precedent, especially seeing they were nearer the scorer’s table. Given the temperatures
were hovering on the bloody hot side and most people were hungover from
Saturday, our skipper decided in his infinite wisdom after winning the toss
to let the home side smash the shit out the ball. There was some reasoning in
this decision, namely we didn’t know anything about the ground, how it would
play, what their strengths were and erm… can’t think anything else. Turner and Williams discuss urban decay and
playing cricket on their own. Well, the pitch was a
good one, the outfield lightning quick and most of Wheatley’s middle order
could hit a ball the two miles into nearby Worminghall. So best our opening
quick Jon Newman (6-0-39-1) bowls absolute fucking rubbish then. Thankfully,
Rundle (6-4-13-1) had an on day, I
say thankfully, because the shite at the other end was deplorable. Howarth’s
first 2.4 overs produced a maiden and 4 runs, his next 3.2 produced five
maximums and a further 44 runs. Buffet well and truly bagged there then, but
not quite, you see the skipper had other plans after firstly dropping a
routine catch. Timms subsequently hauled a large American styled barbeque
onto the pitch, bagged a boot load of Aldi burgers and baps and proceeded to
dish out as much fodder as anyone could gorge. Timms went for 63 (off his 6
overs) whilst Pearson (6-0-42-0) proved much tidier but still pretty crap. Tea was a welcome
distraction from the sweaty suffering out in the middle, with a nice spread
helping The MAD to digest chasing 208 for victory in just 30 overs. Howarth
moaned a lot, Rundle giggled a lot and Giant Duck fell asleep. In reply, Turner (13)
and Williams (18) both put their stomachs before the good of the club,
sacrificing their wickets to eat more food back in the pavilion. Geoff (0) also
played in this game. Howarth (33) and
Cartwright (27) then pushed things along nicely, before the former threw his
bat after splicing a full toss and the latter went down in stages with an
assortment of hamstring tears, cramp, hip and knee ailments and a multitude
of back spasms. With Pearson (45)
maintaining the boundary strewn momentum, it suddenly dawned on the visitors
they may have well won this game if indeed they thought they could win this
game, which of course they didn’t at the tea interval. Rundle then hit a
career best 29 if you discount the knock he had on tour at that ground in
Hythe where everyone gets shitfaced, Hotson (13) hit an on-drive, Timms (4)
also batted and Newman naturally protected his subterranean average with 1
not out. The eleventh man didn’t bat on account of him not being there, so a
total of 191-9 was recorded off 29.3 overs and not enough to win the game,
although Jan Webster has subsequently declared over email he would have hit
those three unused balls clean into the bushes without a bounce, so adding a
further 18 to our total we actually won the match. Hurrah. Post-match everyone
decamped to the King & Queen pub which isn’t the Kings Arms (also in
Wheatley). Here the landlady divulged stories of all day binge drinking and
barrel replacements whilst people watched that
game of soccer somewhere in Russia. It was riveting, but not quite as
riveting as the talk of Tour and leaving Oxfordshire behind to get totally
rat arsed. Bring on August 2nd. The countdown has started (for me anyway). ‘Harry Kane’
