Sunday saw the FFTMCC take on the Fat Boys of Wootton
and Bladon. The match was to be played at Cassington, where the team had not
returned since one of, if not the most memorable games in MAD history, for it
was at this ground at the end of the 2013 season (match number #312) that a Mr N Wyatt hit a
four off the final ball of the final over of the final match in the reign of
Martin Westmoreland, to seal the win. Then to tread on his wicket and hand The
MAD the most amazing of victories. After navigating their way past of variety of pubs
called The Red Lion, most of the team found the correct one a few hundred
yards from the ground. This Red Lion is a proper pub, which doesn’t treat
beer as a loss leader for those buying food, has proper regulars, a pool
table, a proper garden and serves bowls of chips after the game. Exactly the
sort of place which is closing at the rate of eight per week due to the
smoking ban and the rise of drinking at home. Bob stares at
Turner’s arse. The teams assembled at the ground (pavilion doors
provided by G Carter, just don’t ask him to put a top coat on them) for the
important tossing of the coin, which Gary duly lost, so we were in the field
for 35 sweltering overs. At this point it’s worth mentioning the ‘crooked’
list, which currently included Reeves (knee), Turner (after effects of
concussion) and Bertie (the new Midge, hips) but would later go on to include
Cartwright (back times two) and Hotson (knee, bollocks and various internal
organs). W&B are somewhat chirpy, but just like The MAD
their barbed comments and general piss taking are directed entirely towards
their teammates. Opening the batting was D Craig <insert James Bond pun
here> It soon became clear that the pitch was going to be a
major factor in the match, with Darley (7-0-19-0) getting deliveries to rear
up viciously off a length at one end whilst Roberts (7-0-31-2) provided a
series of ‘shooters’ from the other. This would continue all afternoon with
batsmen never really feeling ‘in’ and Hotson behind the stumps progressively
picking up bruises and doing well to only concede five byes. Dogget
(keeping) admires one that rears off a Yorker` length. Pearson (5-0-13-1) got an important breakthrough
bringing G Dogget (40) and T Valentine (22) to the crease. For various
reasons, neither of these two are given to running, so instead smacked Timms
(6-0-49-1) to the boundary with alarming regularity. Rundle (7-1-31-1) did
bring back some control before Reeves (3-0-17-1) decided that he wasn’t
injured after all to close the innings. On a wicket resembling parts of the
Somme in 1918, a score of 164 was thought to be a little more than The MAD
would be able to muster. At tea it was good to see Derek and Mrs Hambridge who
provided a proper cup of tea, before it was time to return to the bright
sunshine and knock off 165. Openers J Pearson (18) and R Turner (4) were
watchful and respectful, of the pitch as much as the bowlers, before Turner
finally properly got hold of one, straight into the path of bucket hands
Collett. In at three was Geoff Carter (for all your pavilion,
unvarnished door requirements.) Four balls later he was out again (1) lbw,
but fair play to the man for offering up that it was plumb. Next, we come to
a Mr I Howarth, who was determined not to repeat the rush to the head from
his previous one ball outing. He survived 48 balls for a sensible 15 before
lobbing one to Trinder. During his innings he watched as nearly newbie Joe
Cartwright came in, hit a single, went off injured with back spasms, then the
innings of Timms (5), then to see Joe come back in and then see him go off
again with back ache for the second and final time. He then had to run up and
down a lot as Darley (13) hit three consecutive 2’s and Hotson (0) receive
the second LBW decision of the innings. The svelte Mr
Valentine admires some rare culture from Rundle (batting). At this point W&B decided that the game was up,
with The MAD needing nearly ten an over with only three wickets remaining.
Like the proper good sports they are, they bought on the pie. Coincidently
and simultaneously Reeves (29) decided that as well as being well enough to
bowl, he was also fit enough to face the flans, launching one on to the
pavilion roof for the Champagne moment. The tail further wagged before Rundle
(11) received another shooter from S Poole and C Roberts (4 n.o.) picked up
his customary not out. In the end The MAD achieved 113 in 34.3 overs, well
short of the target. So, a proper game of proper Sunday cricket had come to
a close. W&B are a proper Sunday team, with a similar ethos to The MAD,
play the game properly, but not too seriously. Back to the Red Lion for one
or two more proper pints and then it’s all off home. See you soon lads, just
a shame the strip is a proper dog’s breakfast. ‘Reevsie’
