A week’s a long time
when it’s nearing the end of the season, your memory is going
and all the games are starting to blend in to one. So, what do we remember of
this one? Well it was another (second?) outing for the family Moo. That’s maxi Moo, middle Moo and mini Moo. Even Mel Moo and
Mongrel*
Moo were along for the ride. After a season of short notice cancellations,
clubs folding and other taking Umbridge with us, it was great to play one of
our longest standing friendly rivals. Facing the MAD Moo
family were the Gilkes of Appleton. After Gary lost the toss for a record
equalling eight time, Edward opened the batting whilst Roger, not playing on
this occasion, did a turn as umpire. Non Moo
and Non Moo with Maxi Moo. The mists of time are
descending, but what do we remember from us being in the field? Well several
stand-out moments actually. Gary (6-1-29-4) ripping
through their top order (numbers 2-5.) Mini Moo, Joe Westmoreland flinging
himself around behind the stumps and conceding zero byes. However, the innings
will principally be remembered for a brilliant catch that was and a terrible
one that wasn’t. First up Dan Westmoreland threw up
a tempter to J Bennett who tried to smear it over mid-off. The ball flew high
to where Russ Turner was standing. He leapt like a salmon, thrusting one hand
high into the air and to his right. Clutching the ball
he crashed back to earth landing heavily, but never mind dude, when the
injuries have taken their toll, you’ll still have moments like that to
treasure. A great catch landing middle Moo his first wicket for the club.
Immediately after another batsman tried his luck off Dan, looping a ball up
and over to mid-on. Maxi Moo, bucket hands Moo, Moo the record holding all
time catcher for The MAD ran in from to take a simple catch. Father and son
together for a perfect moment. Except he didn’t.
Somehow it squirmed between wrists and chest. That’s
cricket. Stock footage of Pearson (left) extolling the
virtues of patience to a man clasping his head. Kate’s flapjacks, coffee
and walnut cake and banana bread went down well at the interval and then soon
enough it was our turn with the bat. Turner (38) played a well-balanced
innings, but it was really left to two players of contrasting styles. Chris
Williams is our Kevin Peterson, brilliant and infuriating in equal measure.
He holed out to long-on for 24, when yet again a high score was there for the
taking, but if he didn’t play that type of shot
maybe he would lose more than he gained. Or maybe he was mentally still on
the beach after returning from a recent French holiday. At the other end
Pearson was more like a stoic opening batsman, Atherton perhaps, he scored
four runs off his first 18 balls before starting to push ones and twos until
after 57 deliveries, he hit his first four. Chasing 151 it was a wonderfully
paced innings ending with victory on 70 not out. There was just time for Maxi
Moo to get out for six and a returning Ian Leggate to get three not out. Mini
Moo sat with his pads on for a few overs. The Gonz. The forecast had never
looked great, but for once we managed to complete the game and make it to the
pub before the heavens opened. Always a good game, swinging in our favour on
this particular occasion, both teams represented by
families. As everything around it both inside and
outside of cricket falls apart, let’s keep this one going. * The Moo mongrel is actually a
pedigree black Labrador, mis-named for alliterative purposes. ‘Reeves’
