It is believed that
Humans first inhabited the Earth approximately 66,000,000 (66 Million) years
ago. Fast forward 65,998,400 years to the 16th Century and not
only did the first recorded cricket match take place, but Gin, a distilled
mixture of alcohol, Juniper berries and other earthly botanicals was invented.
Fast forward a further 417 years to 2017 and the first recorded cricket match
between the Far from the MCC and Hendricks took place that combined both
pastimes. The match is now one of the stand-out fixtures in The MAD
Cricketing Calendar with the opportunity to top up your personal Gin stock
with a bottle of Hendricks finest if voted The MAD MOM by our oppo. With various festivals
all over the UK being cancelled due to torrential rain and high winds it was
a small miracle that this game even took place. “I am never again going to
start another game in the rain” was a remark made by Ian Howarth a few years
back, but this time it had no relevance as he was on a post tour mini
sabbatical to Felixstowe. However, he duly sent a message of good luck to
Russ in the form of a photo of him and wife Vicki on the Felixstowe seafront
in glorious sunshine and a comment of “Fuck Cricket in the rain.” Turner won the coin toss
again (what a tosser the bloke is!) and allowed
Hendricks to choose their own destiny, so with Brasenose bathed in sunshine
they chose to bat - Bad weather? What bad weather? The wind then picked up
blowing the covers to the boundary and a downpour greeted the players. This
was to be the pattern throughout the match. Darley (2-1-2-2) opened up bowling into the wind and his first 3 balls were
dot, wicket, wicket. The first caught at mid-on by Thorn. The second a full,
straight one hitting halfway up Captain Saunders’ middle stump. With 4 slips
and a crowded bat the hat-trick ball was very much a damp squib as Darley’s
over exertion never looked like troubling the batsman. Darley’s cordon. Timms (4-2-10-1) chose
to bowl with the wind because as he put it “I’m not sure I’ll get the ball up
to the stumps,” then proceeded to bowl a “Hole in (1)” and doing so notched
up his 200th wicket for The MAD. Rundle (4-0-19-2) replaced Darley and
rattled the stumps a couple of times as Hendricks slumped to 16 for 5. A very
tidy spell from Anderson (4-0-11-0) kept the pressure on. O. May batting at #4
steadied the Hendricks ship, retiring at the traditional 42 he finished with
a flourish of four 4s in a row off Smith and would return at 9 wickets down
to add a further 5 runs in an unbeaten 47*. However, Smith would
have the final say by claiming the first ever MAD T20 5fer, ending up with
figures of (4-0-28-5) – The 5th wicket a smartly taken catch by Hotson behind
the stumps. Reeves (1-0-8-0) got to bowl just one solitary over as Hendricks
were skittled out for 87 with 1 and a bit over remaining. In reply, Emerson (35
off 27) sent the ball to all parts and Carter (2) didn’t.
Geoff also failed to repeat a much anticipated and publicised six from tour.
Reeves (30*) found the middle of his bat and boundaries consistently and
Darley, with a rare opportunity to bat up the order hit a quick fire 6 from 6
until he holed out to extra cover. Needing just 5 runs for victory, Turner
(7*) in a fitting end to his first season as T20 Captain, clipped the winning
runs to the leg side boundary for 4 and the game was won. As the players left the
field the rain came and stayed but who cared the game was done. Thorn picked
up the Hendricks MOM Gin award and a traditional Hendricks tour cake was
shared out as the Cricketing Earthlings toasted this “Encounter of the 3rd
kind.” Tim & Co. we look forward to hosting you again in 2020 or in
approximately 66,000,001 years since it was believed that Humans inhabited
the Earth. T. P. W seals the deal (with said gin). * * STOP PRESS * * On scrutinising this
match report, Ian Howarth identified a glaring inaccuracy. He doesn’t question when Humans first inhabited the Earth or
when the first Cricket match was recorded or when Gin was invented. He claims
the he was the first MAD player to achieve a T20 5Fer and
looking back at the archives he is indeed our cricketing Spartacus! – On 10th
July 2009 (match #177) he returned figures of 4-1-5-5 v OUO. Included in the
5-wicket haul was a certain A. Darley (5). So, sorry Thorn, still a great
achievement, but you were pipped by 3,682 days! And what of G. J. Timms
who fed us such treachery regarding Thorn’s 5fer? – A fitting punishment from
417 years ago “Off with his head!” – Amen ‘Ashers’
