Did we mention that the winners of this match would be playing at Queens College next season? Ah well, everyone knows now, good to get that one out of the way.

After several teams had cancelled on us already this season, citing lack of players, it was good to have a nailed-on fixture against one of our longest standing opponents. It has to be said that the rivalry has somewhat mellowed over the years, with both teams now firmly of the opinion that it’s the spirit rather than the result which is the more important. This year an additional element was added that all proceeds would be given to charity, Helen & Douglas House as it happens, so everyone was in good humour, even the treasurer.

All about spirit and not the result once you realise you’re all crap.

The game saw a welcome return to David Emerson (23 off 22), who had managed to get body and soul in harmony for a return to The MAD ranks. He opened the batting with James Pearson (31) after we had been put in to bat.

After an opening stand of 45, the openers gave way to Hadfield (43) and Pops / Renon (48 or 50.) Renon was denied a fifty after being caught by Walter off the bowling of Symons, but more specifically by umpire Darley calling a 4, when a drive back over the bowler’s head had clearly sailed over the boundary and the head of Williams’ (Pops) father. That’s the actual boundary, rather than the imaginary one Darley thought was located just in front of the sight screen about 20 yards further on. In his defence, why would the sight screen not be on the boundary?

Actual photo of that maximum which counted for four because of A. Darley’s visionary tumour.

Ian Howarth (13) made a quick fire 13 before being bowled by Wyatt for about the millionth time over the years. With Russ (5 n.o.) and Timms (4 n.o) scrambling a few runs at the end, The MAD reached a more that respectable 175 in 35 overs. Timms in particular had some luck during his five balls, having a sitter dropped and a run out chance missed.

Tea was a somewhat mixed bag, with Isis providing the main course and The MAD, the sweet, which David Emerson interpreted as some sweets and Mark Rundle defined as four packets of Jaffa cakes. Some of us provided the most delicious flap jacks, just saying.

Hadfield (batting) is a like a vintage wine: getting better by playing more than one game a season.

Needing to score at exactly five per over, Isis were immediately pegged back by opening bowlers Darley and Rundle, posting almost identical figures of 7-2-17-2 and 7-2-17-2. Rundle finally bought his record breaking wicketless spell to an end, to the delight and amazement of everyone. Captain Timms scooped the Champagne moment with a Ben Stokes style leaping catch at Point.

With all the regular keepers being unavailable for the game, Russ stepped in. It was something of a baptism of fire against the rapid throw downs from Darley. He did a great job, throwing himself around and limiting byes to just a single.

For Isis, Penhallurick (31) and Kella (31) offered some resistance, before the former walked on a caught behind when only he could have known for sure. That summed up the spirit of the game. Howarth (3-0-13-3) was introduced late on to rip through the lower order, taking the three stalwarts of Whiter, Wyatt and East, with Wyatt for a golden. That somewhat addresses an imbalance over the years. Finally, Pearson and Turner conspired to return the ball to the stumps in under 30 minutes, thus running out Blatchford, to end the innings.

So, cricket and palliative care were the winners today, with club finances the only loser. Bank holiday Monday in prospect, sitting round with a few tins, good times. See you at Queens next year guys, home and away?
