In previous years we’ve been to Enstonia, former Soviet Republic in the frozen wastes of northern Europe. Last year in contrast it was Estania, sun baked island in the mid-Atlantic. This year however we opted for a ‘staycation’ and made the short trip up the road from Oxford to the village of Enstone.

We were playing on the astroturf, meaning most players would automatically pack their trainers. However, there are several harbingers of summer. The sound of the first cuckoo, the smell of the first barbeque and of course the first sight of Thornton, bowling in his work boots.

As the team arrived, it didn’t go unnoticed that the boundary had been bought in some considerable distance, thus avoiding that dispiriting chase down the hill. This was generally agreed to be a fine idea.

Enstone won the toss and decided to field, giving captain Timms his first chance to post a total this season. He sent out Renon (formerly known as Pops, correctly known as Chris) and Jake (known as Jake). Renon (46) not Pops was the first to fall playing a shot which apparently always gets him out. There’s a simple remedy for that dude, give up cricket, there’s no other possible solution. Jake (17) was much more watchful, doing a good job of seeing off the openers before finally falling.

Turner (3) and Rundle (3) scratched around rather unsuccessfully until the arrival of new father Pearson (79 n.o.) to turn the match in our favour. He also looked scratchy at first, but despite the sleepless nights, a first big six seemed to settle any nerves and from there it was a wonderful display of picking the bad balls to propel us towards a more than decent total. During this time skipper Timms briefly took the field, partly to bring the hosts up to a full quota of fielders, but mainly so he could explain what wides are to umpire Corne. With Reeves (25) swinging and hitting and useful contributions from Timms (4) and Roberts (6), The MAD put on 45 runs in the final 5 overs to post a very respectable 210.

Steady start to The MAD innings.

Instead of hunkering down and sipping cups of hot cocoa, or bathing in the scorching sunshine, this year the team simply took tea in the clubhouse, which was excellent as usual.

In reply, Enstone marginally had the better of the early exchanges despite Reeves (6-0-36-1) bowling Chaminda (20), claiming his 200th wicket for the club and the champagne moment for the match in the process. Enstone were 76-1 after 15 overs and the match was right in the balance when the skipper bought himself in to the attack to provide the pivotal moment in the match. Brook (43) had played well up until that point, but he wasn’t the first and won’t be the last to underestimate the turn of Timms. Trying to smack the first ball out of the park he succeeded only in spooning it back in the direction of the bowler. Once he’d sorted out his trainers being tied to each other, Gary took his first caught and bowled of the season. He went on to take a decent 3-for (nay 4-for if he actually learnt to appeal).

After that, left hander Forder (32) put up spirited resistance, but at the other end, the run rate was taking a nose-dive. There was also one moment of mild controversy in the final moments of the match as Corne (4-1-17-0) bowled a beautiful lifter, taking an edge for Geoff to take a good catch behind the stumps. Everyone, including the residents of Enstonia and Estania heard the snick, but not the batsman, apparently.

Two wickets for Thornton (3-0-3-2) was decent reward and a further two for Pearson (4-3-9-2) meant that he was a shoe-in for man of the match. Cheers Enstone, these matches always swing one way or the other based on who is available and one or two stand-out performances. We look forward to travelling to somewhere in Europe to continue the series next year.
