If history really is
written by the victors, then welcome to the first MAD match report of the
season. Yes, break out the green
ink, have a virtual high five, we only went and won one, before the end of
July too. The MAD’s first win would see a lovely cameo from
Mr Timms. The MAD turned up at the
sewage works just outside Appleton for one of the most eagerly anticipated
games of the season. Both teams have had their ups and downs over the years
with one, other or both teams going through healthy and lean periods.
Appleton appear in good shape, with a decent mix of familiar faces and
budding youth players. For The MAD, well, a lot of familiar faces. Turner lost the toss (or
in his words, we lost the toss) and we were fielding. The MAD had two
seasonal debutants in Newman and Roberts, and it was Salad who opened the
bowling. The skipper had decided to mix things up a bit
so it was Howarth from the other end. For Appleton, the openers E Gilkes and
A Jeffries were running aggressively until after a close shave or two they
got a little too aggressive and Jeffries was run out by a direct hit from
Pearson. Things could have got better for Fattori if he’d
tried to stop a catch with his hands rather than his chest cavity. Appleton skipper H Blomerus in action. The Appleton engine room
(Gilkes brothers plus J Bennett) fired on all cylinders against decent
bowling from Reeves (3-0-15-0), Timms (4-0-38-0) and Pearson (2-0-15-0), but
balls in the air fell into spaces, with the spaces sometimes being the other
side of the boundary, as Appleton pushed on at 6 per over. It was the
introduction of Roberts that turned the game. His 3-0-14-2, along with the
return of Howarth (4-1-8-1) stemmed the flow at a crucial time. Appleton
reached 114 in their 20 overs, probably a par score. Skipper Russ persisted
with his unorthodox approach by sending Reeves (4) out to bat with the more
orthodox (competent) opener Williams (13). Timms (31 not out, retired) was
soon at the crease and along with Pearson (33 not out, retired) they provided
the delicious bread for the shit sandwich that was
Hotson (golden). Bob and Cartwright await a bat as the sun goes
down. At 86 for 3 in the
twelfth over, The MAD were cruising nicely although there was still work to be done. Youngster Fox for Appleton (3.5-1-10-2),
is a talent and did for both Cartwright and Turner. As usual it was up to the
bowlers to save the day, so openers Newman (7*) and Howarth (3*) returned
with the bat to bookend The MAD contribution and win in the 19th over. Geoff has now batted
twice in two games, twice on Sunday, none tonight. Just time to mention a
rejuvenated, fragrant and resplendent Giant Duck.
Having survived the washing machine and tumble drier in the Turner household
he / she is no longer a vessel of infection…. It’s
sometimes said that you don’t realise what you’ve got until it’s gone. In
this case you don’t realise what you’ve missed until
it’s back. A great evening, wonderful well-matched opposition and back to the
pub after. ‘Reevsie’
