To be fair it had been
on the cards for a few weeks, but this was a hell of a beating. Having failed
to score more than 100 runs in the previous five outings and lacking much
penetration in the bowling, it was only a matter of time before The MAD were
on the wrong end of a heavy defeat. We’d been saved
in previous weeks by batting first and therefore losing quickly rather than
having the thrashing dragged out. Way… way… way too much talent. First ball of the OUCCC
innings, Malhotra hit a screamer off Reeves. Russ made a decent attempt and
got a hand to it at mid-on, but couldn’t cling on.
Things went downhill from there really with Malhotra retiring on 54 off about
49 balls. They were too good, with the top three playing aggressive but
controlled innings, giving the engine room licence to hit out. The MAD spent
the best part of two and a half hours picking the ball out of the dense
thorny hedged surround, as 6’s peppered the boundary. Even late in their
innings, OUCCC were running aggressively to squeeze every
last run available, amassing a total of 278-4 in their 35 overs. If
there was any highlight to this, it was Russ taking a wicket and Gary and
Richard both with decent catches. No-one really bowled badly, with Darley
(MOTM) in particular doing well but even good balls
were pinging to or over the rope. Darley (fine leg) watches another ball crunched
to the boundary. First ball of The MAD
innings, Nuno was out to a beauty taking the top of off. Joe followed him
also for a golden later in the first over and there was no way back. To say
that Russ and Jan steadied the ship would be extremely generous, more like
trying to bail out the Titanic with a thimble. Russ was run out in a mix up with
Jan where the blame was at least equally shared. Quote of the day went to
Gary as Russ was walking off “remember your mum’s here….” “What say, lads… pretty shit, huh?” OUCCC never took their
foot off the throat as The MAD succumbed for 58 and a record defeat
stretching all the way back to the second ever game in our history. Not
really a contest in any meaningful way and it’s
difficult to see this one surviving. Could be the end of the affair? ‘Reevsie’
