Oh yes, after one year,
ten months and eighteen days we were finally back at our spiritual home of
Brasenose. The sun was shining, the new opposition of The Prince of Wales
(not the one in Iffley Village) appeared friendly
and Gary won the toss, it was all looking so good. In other news the England
football team were kicking off their Euro 2020 (or 21) campaign at Wembley
one hour into our own contest. The fact Gary that managed to fill this
fixture with 12th men to spare is testament to what people think their
priorities are on a warm afternoon in June. The group stages are always
boring anyway, England will limp through with a win over Scotland before a
fantastic win in the round of 16 at which point the country will go into a
frenzy of expectation. From there it will be a plucky performance against
superior opposition before penalties, poor refereeing decisions and some bad
fortune will see players dreaming of what might be in oohhh,
twelve month’s time. Mark my words. Home for over a decade, but the first day back
since 2019… and the visit of The Astons. Back to the ‘contest’ at
hand. The use of inverted commas here is an indication that The MAD were
never really at the races in this one. Once Williams (5) had wandered out of
his crease for no particular reason to be stumped by
a throw from the keeper, Webster (2) and Hadfield could only really dig in.
The PoW played it really well,
the bowling wasn’t intimidating, but it was accurate, meaning that runs were
very hard to come by. When anyone such as Shorten (6) did try to free their
hands, they were quickly sent packing, as was Wonky (4), who was so
determined to get out immediately, he ran himself out off
a no-ball. At 38 for 5 in the 22nd over it was looking like a very short
afternoon before the POW took further pity and bought on their pie chuckers. From there Hadfield (64) and Turner (26) found
some joy with a partnership of 67, but a couple of direct hit runouts showed PoW could have turned the screw at any stage. The MAD did
at least manage to bat their allotted 35 overs, but 133 was never going to be
enough. Webster wished he’d opted to yawn at the
football. In reply, PoW never looks in trouble, Gary
dropped a very smart chance at slip after a late late
cut off Darley’s bowling (4-1-22-0) and Darley returned the favour spilling a
difficult one in the deep from Gary (3-0-23-0), whilst trying to emulate
England and Croatia, nearly breaking his foot in the process. That was as
close as we got to a wicket. The MAD can hold their heads up high in the
sportsmanship stakes, calling back opener A Ralph, initially given out LBW,
he was departing without complaint before several MAD fielders opined that it
came off his bat first. He retired soon after but Allen and Peatman saw PoW home with 10 overs to spare, again nicely played,
clinical but not aggressive or exultant. The PoW
won by 10 wickets. Or nine if you count the fact
they only had 10 players, or eight if you count the retiree or forget about
our sporting conduct. It was good to be back
at Brasenose, great to sit around after the game with a few warm beers. Only
good thoughts towards PoW, they’re a fine outfit,
but a cut above what was a decidedly average pub team today. ‘Reevsie’
