This
was the penultimate game of the season, soon to be upgraded to being the
final game of the season, after the following week’s trip to Hampstead
Norreys was the victim of secretarial incompetence. For the most part the Far
from the MCC were second best throughout the match, and at other times third
best. However, cricket like most sports, does have its little quirks and none
more so than the end of this match. So, let’s rewind…. After
a pre-game pint at to The White Hart pub, the team were then embroiled in a driving
fiasco which saw them getting lost in convoy on Mill Lane… apparently a more
direct approach to the ground. A pleasantly warm yet cloudy day would see
Skipper Timms win the final toss of the year and allow the team to make the ill-informed
and stupid decision to bat first on an obvious bowling paradise. Williams
(16) would time a few first up whilst the rest of the team were largely crap. Brigadier Pearson (47) was an exception of course,
his average at this ground exemplary, but with a fifty in the bag, he chose
to pull it out (the bag) and instead whack it to some kid at mid off. James’ only notable partner during this
lamentable batting display would be E. Xtras (37)
whose steady accumulation and level head impressed all. 130-9 and David
Emerson removed his pads and sat back down after contributing nothing save
for a few smart comments. Fuselier Pearson continuing his excellent form at
Nettlebed. BYO
teas were a mixed dish at the interval, with Williams’ little Tupperware box
and perfectly packed delicacies an obvious gift from his mum. Others ate
random leaves and locally sourced berries (Jake), Russ a 2 for 1 offer of 24”
pizzas, and the chaotic and more disorganised (Howarth) relying on Kate
Reeves’ flapjacks courtesy of the Tintin tin. It is also worth noting that Mr
Shorten did bring a supply of cucumbers but failed to being the accompanying
salad cream (tut tut). With
the pitch now flattening out appreciably, the home team’s reply was a robust one,
with W. Cassar’s (21) early fireworks soon to be outsparkled by the rockets
of S. Butler (34). Amidst the pyrotechnics, Timms (3-0-29-0) was perhaps
unlucky to miss out on econ, especially if you discount the four balls redirected
to Henley and nearby Caversham. Around this point Rundle (3-0-16-0) had
finally managed to aim a whole over at the stumps with the score having
traversed upwardly to 97-2. Here, Staff Sergeant Pearson discusses a man seen
crouching and laying some cable. So…
where are we? Well, Nettlebed required just 34 runs to win with 8 wickets in
hand. Now for something very curious and villagey to happen…. Bristling
with positive energy (PMA), James Hoskins (7-3-16-2) was belatedly brought
into the attack to throw down a smorgasbord of well-cooked pastries, Simmons
(38) befuddled by one with a rather delicious glaze the first to go. Perhaps
channelling this sudden zest in the field, Mr Shorten (5.3-1-16-4) would now
barrel in from the Dogshit End to deliver a rather splendid (soon to be famous)
hat-trick, his second ball a beauty which rumbled Butler’s woodwork. With a
further wicket apiece after that
hat-trick and among much excitement, we had a grandstand finish with 5 runs
still required for a Nettlebed win. Awaking from his pitch side slumber, Vockins
Snr buckled up and entered the fray at #10. He prodded a few back, surveyed
the surrounds, stretched his arms and then… WHACK WHACK.
Game over. A fine ending to the match and as would transpire, a fitting
bookend to the season as a whole. It
is now the middle of September and leaves are beginning to turn auburn fall, a
season that started way back in April in Ascott-under-Wychwood has run its
course. There have been many ups (well, a few anyway) and there have been many
downs (well, a lot actually) but there have been many many celebrated
memories. Gentlemen,
it has been a pleasure as always, see you for the next one! ‘Spam’
