Three individuals have scored all The MAD’s runs this year [to date] and one of them is leaving. He is making a new life for himself Down Under in a country fat at the weight with convicts and having a zero policy towards the Chinese Flu. You will be sorely missed, James … you really will, especially given over to the fact you are now considered ‘useful’. If it doesn’t quite pan out for you and your good lady, and you get tired of the recurring three-month lockdowns and surviving on barbequed roadkill, then you will always be welcomed back ‘home’ to open arms [despite your desertion]. Please note however that subs may very well have risen with the cost of living [in contrast to our results].

On a blindingly hot day during a blindingly hot summer, Wootton won the toss and inexplicably decided to chase some leather in some thirty-four-degree heat. We are unsure whether our long-standing rivals gravitated over to sadomasochism during the pandemical years, but this decision was both unfathomable as it was completely unfathomable. I discussed the decision at length with Poole Snr at the pub after the game, and after we agreed to completely disagree [which is always heartening], we shook hands firmly as he told me to “fuck off”.

Following a cricket guard bat of honour [excluding his skipper who couldn’t be arsed], James went out to the middle to star and perform in his last Sunday match in Oxford. Of course, it never completely works out like that, and although he made a brisk 20, it will be long forgotten because of what happened thereafter.

After Dan Westmoreland got a good one [were there any others?], James’ dance partners Williams and Hadfield settled in to gorge on a flattish track and some even flatter bowling. Chris is always the more flamboyantly aerial, whereas the highly-coached and bespectacled chap going under an infamous nickname is the more silky on the ground. Together they ran riot as Wootton hopes and aspirations slowly evaporated into the shit covered outfield.

Hadfield was in imperious form with the bat (again).

With drink breaks coming and going and a pitch side gazebo filling up with MAD stars past and present, Williams’ luck held firm with his pitching wedge, as his driving iron wreaked the damage. Joy uncontained that he raised his bat on the ton, and with overs to spare, Gary Littlechild’s MAD high score record suddenly loomed into view. Chris didn’t just pass it but flatten it into the Brasenose turf with a wonderful knock of 138 not out. Combining with Hadfield (67*) for a record MAD third wicket partnership of 162*, the home team totalled 235-2 off their 35 overs as Andrew Darley sat sulking with his pads on most the day.

Williams salutes the hardened MAD pissheads.

With several of their much-lauded stars missing, the Wootton reply never really threatened and with wickets falling regularly, the required run-worm continue to climb. Mike (2-24) took a fine reactionary caught and bowled, and with Turner pouching the dangerous Nick Hambridge (6) off Hoskins (1-29) the writing was very much on the [Brasenose pavilion] wall. A clearly knackered Mr Bateman even guested for his old club, but his wasn’t a long stay either.

Timms twirled away (2-17) whilst boasting he had “finally learnt to bowl” and young Joe Westmoreland (6-0-29-1) produced a peach to get rid of Rudd for 17. When all was said and done, and Howarth and Turner had avoided TFCs with a few overs at the death, The MAD won out by 98 runs.

A celebratory day and one ultimately tinged with a fair degree of sadness. All the best, James. Been great to know you, we hope to see you again [on Tour maybe?]

A quick straw poll on Bateman being a bloody nice chap (fined for self-celebration).
