So, there’s no use
pretending that this was either a classic match, or indeed a classic match
report, having been banged out under duress (the report that is) on one of
the hottest days of the year (and indeed all time) mainly to keep the editor
from his constant moaning, but then he has to, or nothing would get done
around here. The MAD rocked up to
count the Bakers (just nine short of the Baker’s dozen this time) and express
their disappointment that Claire Taylor wasn’t playing this year. Still, it
was very nice to be back at Brasenose. It’s been three years since we’d
played the Lemmings and for some almost as long since they’d played at all at
our home ground. To show that we’d missed the place and in an off-field MAD
moment, JMO managed to reduce the deck chair count by one, putting his skinny
arse through it. The furry critters won
the toss and offered the MAD first go, which many were very pleased about
given that it was shaping up to be a hot afternoon. On paper the MAD had a
stellar batting line up, but then cricket isn’t played on blah blah blah. The
Lemmings opened with Bakers J and P, who were miserly to say the least. C
Williams (5) threatened to get going before lobbing a simple catch to
mid-wicket. At the other end Hadfield (18 off 57) was hoping that the innings
could be built around him as he waited and waited for the bad ball which
rarely arrived. Hadfield the Diligent, until he got that crap one he dollied up. Howarth (30 off 44) and
Pearson (31 n.o. off 49) kept the innings ticking
along, but it was difficult to see where the acceleration was going to come
from. Shorten (12 off 11) threatened briefly, but there were no weak spots in
the Lemming’s attack and the MAD eventually limped to 114 in their 35 overs,
which never looked like being competitive. A sumptuous tea was
enjoyed by MAD, Lemmings and supporters before it
was back on to the field for the MAD reply. Shorten (4-0-19-1) and Howarth
(5-0-16-1) did some bowling, whilst Reeves (7-1-22-1) combined with Hotson
for the Champagne Moment and a sharp catch behind the stumps, to take his
first wicket of the season. He now draws level with Timms in the ‘race to
two’. Aah, the symbolism of Lemmings huddled around
broken stumps [and dreams]…. The match could have
been different if The MAD had got Wood (71 n.o.)
early, but that never looked likely as he made mincemeat of the small total.
Had the match been between the Bakers and The MAD and been decided purely on
wickets it would have been 6-0 to the Bakers. With the ‘M’ incarnation
accounting for 5 on his own. So, the old rivalry
continues, it’s almost as if some normality is returning. Great to be back at
Brasenose and great to see the familiar faces. Bring Claire with you next
time. Shorten (scoring) picking through the bones of
another shambles…. ‘Reeves’
