Before I
review this game, let us refresh our memories with a bit of GCSE maths. Today
we shall be considering complex numbers: numbers that are expressed in the
form of a+ib where, a and b
are real numbers and 'i' is an imaginary
number. All real numbers can be thought of as complex numbers which have zero
imaginary part. It’s the imaginary part we’re focusing on today. Complex
numbers have applications in many scientific areas, including signal
processing, control theory, electromagnetism, fluid dynamics, quantum
mechanics, cartography, and vibration analysis. Complex numbers don’t occur
naturally in cricket, but this game featured plenty of imaginary and just
plain wrong ones. Library footage of Matt trying
to understand what other hands have recorded in the scorebook…. The start
of the match, played in murky conditions at Magdalen College’s Sports Ground,
is significant in the fact that this was possibly the only time during the
evening that the scorebook and scoreboard tallied, and were indeed correct.
The Strollers won the toss and batted, commencing their innings on 0 for 0.
In several ways, this was as good as it got. Two of
the three Baldocks opened the innings, “E” retiring
randomly on 26 before “M” became the first to fall, bowled by the returning
Smith. De Silva retired next on 27 as the Strollers pressed on for a big
total, as The MAD battled through several rain showers (maybe three or four,
but less than six) under the watchful eye of a red kite, who made a number
(unrecorded) of circuits over the ground. The
arrival of Harris into the attack from the Marston end slowed the run scoring
and bought The MAD back into the game, claiming five wickets for very few
including Pickford for a golden and the dangerous Higgs to a fine catch from
Webster for 24. Bullock bowled the final over, picking up big-hitting Nawaz
to a Williams catch in the deep with the score on 142. The final total was
136. Library footage of Harris
bowling with the sun on his back…. For The MAD,
Williams started quickly, reaching twenty before Bateman fell for two the
other end. Williams would retire for a brisk 32. Bullock fell for eight
(confirmed), Smith for either nought or one (one credited) and Hotson for an
undisclosed number, later confirmed as an excellent eighteen. Gerber
went out to bat with ten runs to his name and returned eighteen balls later
with five. Four of those ten were later claimed by Timms, who had four, or
maybe five, but, in his estimation, eight. Carter had three from five and
Rundle none from two; this at least was undisputed. The MAD
finished somewhere in the late eighties, possibly 88, and probably 48 behind. Matt scored 8 or 58 depending on which scorebook
you looked at…. ‘Rachel Riley’
